Abstract
A 5D Machian generalization of Einstein's theory of gravitation is described in which the cosmological constant appears as the contribution of the rest of the universe to the gravitational field of an “isolated” source. This work amounts to a Machian interpretation of the Kaluza-Klein theory. The standard cosmological models are derived in this framework, and it is shown that - in conformity with the interpretation presented here - the cosmological constant does not directly contribute to the geometric description of the universe as a whole.

Kaluza-Klein gravity

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss the cosmological and astrophysical implications of extra dimensions, and conclude that none of the three approaches can be ruled out on observational grounds at the present time.

Standard clocks, orbital precession and the cosmological constant

TL;DR: In this article, the influence of the cosmological constant on the gravitomagnetic clock effect and the gravitational time delay of electromagnetic rays is discussed, and a general expression for the effect of Λ on pericentre precession is given for arbitrary orbital eccentricity.

Gravitomagnetism and the Clock Effect

TL;DR: In this paper, it is shown that the gravitomagnetic precession of a gyroscope is intimately connected with the special temporal structure around a rotating mass that is revealed by the clock effect, and the implications of this effect for the notion of inertial dragging in the general theory of relativity are presented.

Universe models with a variable cosmological 'constant' and a 'big bounce'

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a rich class of exact solutions that contain radiation-dominated and matter-dominated models for the early and late universe, which are compatible with extensions of general relativity to string and membrane theory.

Dynamics in Kaluza± Klein Gravity and a Fifth Force

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors derived the field equations and equa tions of motion for 5-dimensional relativity in the general case where the metric can depend on all 5 coordinates (i.e., Kaluza-Klein theory without the cylinder restriction).
