TLDR
In this article, a simple fractionation procedure membrane filtration was successfully applied to the identification of the formation of hydroxyaluminosilicates and the mechanism of formation was shown to proceed through the inhibition of the nucleation of aluminium hydroxide.

The Bioavailability and Toxicity of Aluminum in Aquatic Environments

TL;DR: In this paper, the biological effects of Al, primarily with respect to the chemical factors controlling Al bioavailability and toxicity, and how its biological effects are best predicted, are reviewed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Systematics and Biology of Silica Bodies in Monocotyledons

TL;DR: The distribution and diversity of opaline silica bodies in monocotyledons in a phylogenetic framework is described, together with a review of techniques used for their examination, and the ecology, function and economic applications of these cell inclusions are described.

Effect of silicon on reducing cadmium toxicity in durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. cv. Claudio W.) grown in a soil with aged contamination.

TL;DR: It is concluded that significant plant-available Si in soil contributes to decreased Cd concentrations in wheat shoots and could be implemented in a general scheme aiming at controlling Cd concentration in wheat.

Aluminum and Alzheimer's disease: model studies

TL;DR: In this article, it was suggested that silicates be considered for therapeutic use to delay the onset of plaques and tangles in Alzheimer's disease, which was also reversed by the addition of silicates.

Silicate complexes of aluminum(III) in aqueous systems

TL;DR: The lifetime of the homogeneous solution depending on the pH, the nature of the cation(s) present, and the Al and Si concentrations has been studied in this article, showing that aluminum(III) can expand its coordination number easily from four to six in acyclic structures.

Acute toxicity of aluminium to fish eliminated in silicon-rich acid waters

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that, with an excess of Si over Al and with the formation of hydroxy-aluminosilicate species, the bioavailability of aluminium at pH 5 is reduced and acute toxicity is eliminated.
Journal ArticleDOI

The chemistry of aluminum and silicon in relation to Alzheimer's disease.

TL;DR: It is shown that aluminum species interact with silicic acid, Si(OH)4--a normal component of plasma--to form aluminosilicate species solubilized by citrate, calling attention to the strong binding of cationic aluminum species to proximate phosphate groups, as in the inositol phosphates.

Soluble aluminum silicates: stoichiometry, stability, and implications for environmental geochemistry.

TL;DR: A fluorescence probe technique was used to show that Al-Si complexes account for up to 95% of the total inorganic mononuclear Al in natural waters, which may be key components controlling the formation of metastable and new stable minerals during interactions between water and rocks or soils.

Hydroxyaluminosilicate formation in solutions of low total aluminum concentration

TL;DR: In this paper, the discriminatory power of dialysis, ion exchange and membrane filtration techniques to identify hydroxyaluminosilicate (HAS) formation in solutions of nearphysiological aluminium concentration has been tested.
