A new protocol for wear testing of total knee prostheses from real joint kinematic data: Towards a scenario of realistic simulations of daily living activities.

TLDR
A realistic scenario for simulation of various motor tasks using a displacement controlled wear testing machine is presented and the knee simulator showed an accurate reproduction of the various motion and load patterns, with average error lower than 5%.

Vitamin E stabilised polyethylene for total knee arthroplasty evaluated under highly demanding activities wear simulation.

TL;DR: Artificial ageing of standard polyethylene to an oxidation index of 0.7-0.95 in combination with HDA knee wear simulation, is able to create subsurface delamination, structural material fatigue in vitro, whereas for the vitamin-E-blended materials no evidence of progressive wear, fatigue or delamination was found.
Journal ArticleDOI

Development of a Novel in Silico Model to Investigate the Influence of Radial Clearance on the Acetabular Cup Contact Pressure in Hip Implants.

TL;DR: The aim of the study was to investigate the cup tensional state by varying the clearance between head and cup by using a novel hard-on-soft finite element model with kinematic and dynamic conditions calculated from a musculoskeletal multibody model during the gait.
Journal ArticleDOI

Knee Wear Assessment: 3D Scanners Used as a Consolidated Procedure

TL;DR: The objective of this study was to assess the wear of mobile total knee polyethylene inserts after an in vitro wear test, and the wear behavior of mobile bearing poly methylene knee configurations was investigated using a knee joint wear simulator.
Journal ArticleDOI

Quantification of wear and deformation in different configurations of polyethylene acetabular cups using micro x-ray computed tomography

TL;DR: This work validated a technique to quantify polyethylene wear in three different batches of ultrahigh-molecular-polyethylene acetabular cups used for hip implants using nondestructive microcomputed tomography.
Journal ArticleDOI

The choice of the femoral center of rotation affects material loss in total knee replacement wear testing - A parametric finite element study of ISO 14243-3.

TL;DR: It was found that variations in the location of the femoral center of rotation can represent a large source of variability in the preclinical testing and evaluation of the wear performance of total knee replacements.

Why are total knee arthroplasties failing today

TL;DR: Fifty percent of early revision total knee arthroplasties in this series were related to instability, malalignment or malposition, and failure of fixation, and half of the revisions in this group of patients were done less than 2 years after the index operation.
Journal ArticleDOI

The mechanics of the knee joint in relation to normal walking.

TL;DR: The mechanics of the knee joint were simplified and defined in mathematical terms and the assumptions made in defining the joint ‘model’ described were discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Why Are Total Knee Arthroplasties Failing Today—Has Anything Changed After 10 Years?

TL;DR: The percentage of revisions performed for polyethylene wear, instability, arthrofibrosis, malalignment and extensor mechanism deficiency has decreased and infection was the most common failure mechanism for early revision and aseptic loosening was themost common reason for late revision.
Journal ArticleDOI

Accurate measurement of three-dimensional knee replacement kinematics using single-plane fluoroscopy

TL;DR: A simple extension of a previously reported object recognition technique has been used to implement a six-degree-of-freedom position/orientation estimator for the measurement of knee replacement motion from two-dimensional fluoroscopic images, indicating it is uniquely well suited for performing dynamic kinematic measurements on individuals with knee replacements.
Journal ArticleDOI

Wear patterns on retrieved polyethylene tibial inserts and their relationship to technical considerations during total knee arthroplasty.

TL;DR: It is indicated that unconstrained tibial component wear patterns and severity may be associated with clinical and mechanical factors under the surgeon's control, including component size and position, and knee alignment and ligament balance.
