Abstract
Magnetic regions on the Sun's surface are observed to absorb large fractions of the p-mode (acoustic) wave power incident upon them. We propose a mechanism to explain the absorption, based on the idea that sunspots are assembled from many individual flux tubes with highly variant physical conditions. Strong gradients in the (perturbed) parameters of a wave propagating through such an inhomogeneous medium result in enhanced absorption of the wave power. The gradients in the wave parameters occur on the scale of the background flux tubes which is smaller than the wavelength

Oscillations and Waves in Sunspots

TL;DR: A review of the current ideas in the field, providing the most coherent picture of sunspot oscillations as by present understanding is provided in this paper, where the authors present a model of the magnetic field modifies the properties of waves in a complex way, and significant advances have been made recently in our understanding of the physics of sunspots with the help of high-resolution observations, analytical theories, as well as numerical simulations.

Mode Conversion of Solar p Modes in non-Vertical Magnetic Fields – i. two-Dimensional Model

TL;DR: In this paper, the efficiency of fast-to-slow magnetoacoustic-gravity wave conversion in non-vertical field with three-dimensional propagation was investigated. And the authors found that the resulting p-mode absorption is significantly enhanced for moderate inclinations at higher frequencies, whereas for p modes at lower frequencies, and the f mode in general, there is no useful enhancement.

NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS OF MULTIPLE SCATTERING OF THE f-MODE BY FLUX TUBES

TL;DR: In this article, the absorption and phase shift of surface-gravity waves caused by groups of magnetic flux tubes were analyzed for several cases with two or three flux tubes embedded in a quiet Sun atmosphere, and it was shown that multiple scattering has a significant impact on the absorption measurements and tends to reduce the phase shift.

Magnetohydrodynamic Waves in Structured Magnetic Fields

TL;DR: In this paper, the nature of surface waves on an interface between two isothermal gases, one of which is embedded within a horizontal magnetic field, is discussed. And the modes of oscillation of an isolated flux tube are reviewed.
