TLDR
This work presents a synchronization framework for personal servers delivered in the form of user scenarios, derived system requirements, design decisions and a software components structure, and a high-level object-based storage API has been defined.Abstract:
The recent growth in the mobile device market has proven the feasibility of mobile storage based consumer electronics products. One of the key features of personal mobile storage devices is the ability to synchronize content and metadata with other mobile and stationary devices. The main problem addressed is automatic data exchange and synchronization in the domain of personal mobile storage devices or personal servers. We present a synchronization framework for personal servers delivered in the form of user scenarios, derived system requirements, design decisions and a software components structure. The synchronization framework was validated through a working prototype which shows added functionality, such as: connectivity with various types of devices from different vendors, synchronization based on user preferences, content-aware synchronization filtering. In order to abstract from implementation specifics of different network protocols, a high-level object-based storage API has been defined.read more

Intelligent Automated Assistant
Thomas R. Gruber,Adam Cheyer,Dag Kittlaus,Didier Rene Guzzoni,Christopher Dean Brigham,Richard Donald Giuli,Marcello Bastea-Forte,Harry J. Saddler +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, an intelligent automated assistant system engages with the user in an integrated, conversational manner using natural language dialog, and invokes external services when appropriate to obtain information or perform various actions.

Using context information to facilitate processing of commands in a virtual assistant
TL;DR: In this article, a virtual assistant uses context information to supplement natural language or gestural input from a user, which helps to clarify the user's intent and reduce the number of candidate interpretations of user's input, and reduces the need for the user to provide excessive clarification input.

Mobile terminal and control method thereof
Daehwan Kim,Yoonki Hong +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a mobile terminal and a control method thereof, which can obtain an image, are provided. But they do not specify how to obtain the image from the mobile terminal, nor how to extract the pictogram from the obtained image.

Graphical user interface and methods of use thereof in a multimedia player
TL;DR: In this article, a hierarchically ordered graphical user interface is presented for a portable multimedia device, and a method, apparatus, and system for providing user supplied configuration data are described, where a first order, or home, interface provides a highest order of user selectable items each of which, when selected, results in a lower order user interface associated with the selected item.

Method and apparatus for building an intelligent automated assistant
Adam Cheyer,Didier Rene Guzzoni +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a method for building an automated assistant includes interfacing a service-oriented architecture that includes a plurality of remote services to an active ontology, where the active ontologies includes at least one active processing element that models a domain.

Managing update conflicts in Bayou, a weakly connected replicated storage system
TL;DR: Bayou as discussed by the authors is a replicated, weakly consistent storage system designed for a mobile computing environment that includes portable machines with less than ideal network connectivity, and it includes novel methods for conflict detection, called dependency checks, and per-write conflict resolution based on client-provid ed merge procedures.

XMIDDLE: A Data-Sharing Middleware for Mobile Computing
TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe xmiddle, a mobile computing middleware that enables the transparent sharing of XML documents across heterogeneous mobile hosts, allowing on-line and off-line access to data.
Mobile Information Access
TL;DR: A scenario that offers a tantalizing glimpse of the power of mobile information access is described and the major obstacles on the path toward this vision are examined.

Set reconciliation with nearly optimal communication complexity
TL;DR: The problem of efficiently reconciling two similar sets held by different hosts while minimizing the communication complexity is considered, and an approach based on the encoding of sets as polynomials is described, exhibiting tractable computational complexity and nearly optimal communication complexity.
