A three-stage theory of international expansion: the link between multinationality and performance in the service sector
TLDR
The authors proposed a unified three-stage theory of international expansion that incorporates both U-shaped and inverted-U-shaped relationship in a sigmoid hypothesis and tested this on data from 11 service industries, highlighting the difference between knowledge-based and capital-intensive service sectors.Abstract:
It is generally assumed that the performance of a firm improves with greater multinationality. Yet recent empirical studies have shown both a U-shaped relationship (which suggests an initially negative effect of international expansion on performance, before the positive returns of international expansion are realized) and an inverted-U-shaped relationship (which suggests that international expansion beyond an optimal level is again detrimental to performance, and results in a negative slope). This paper proposes a new unified three-stage theory of international expansion that incorporates both concepts in a sigmoid hypothesis. It then tests this on data from 11 service industries, highlighting the difference between knowledge-based and capital-intensive service sectors.read more

Measuring Organizational Performance: Towards Methodological Best Practice
TL;DR: In this paper, a review of the operationalization of performance highlights the limited effectiveness of commonly accepted measurement practices in tapping this multidimensional conceptualization, and a call for research that examines triangulation using multiple measures, longitudinal data and alternative methodological formulations as methods of appropriately aligning research contexts with the measurement of organizational performance.

Competitive advantage: creating and sustaining superior performance
TL;DR: Porter's concept of the value chain disaggregates a company into "activities", or the discrete functions or processes that represent the elemental building blocks of competitive advantage as discussed by the authors, has become an essential part of international business thinking, taking strategy from broad vision to an internally consistent configuration of activities.
