In this paper, the authors analyzed the intermodulation distortion of a solid-state feedback amplifier and showed that the feedback is fully effective in reducing the open-loop second-order distortion.
Abstract
This paper analyzes the intermodulation distortion of a solid-state feedback amplifier. Each transistor of the amplifier has been represented by a frequency-dependent model incorporating four nonlinearities. The Volterra series is used as the analysis tool. The primary motivation for this study is that intermodulation distortion is a critical problem in high-frequency long-haul solidstate systems. A computer program that calculates the amplifier intermodulation distortion has been developed. This program can be used to select the optimum bias point of each stage, optimum interstage and feedback networks, and optimum load and source impedances. Good correlation between calculated and measured results was obtained. The closed-form expressions derived show that the feedback is fully effective in reducing the open-loop second-order distortion and that the feedback may not significantly reduce the open-loop third-order distortion, if the "second-order interaction" phenomenon is dominant. The second-order interaction is explained in detail in this paper.

Identification of weakly nonlinear systems using input and output measurements

TL;DR: In this article, a pencil-of-functions system identification technique for weakly nonlinear systems is presented. But the identification technique is a black-box procedure in that only measurements at the system input and output terminals are required.

Linearity Enhancement Techniques in Radio Receiver Front-Ends

TL;DR: An overview of circuit and architectural techniques for enhancing receiver front-end linearity is presented, and two types of techniques are described, those that rely on device or circuit level linearization, through reduction of nonlinear coefficients, and those that reliance on attenuation of undesirable interferers.

Nonlinear distortion analysis of p-i-n diode attenuators using Volterra series representations

TL;DR: In this article, an application of the Volterra series to the analysis of a network with nonlinear elements represented by VOLTERRA series is presented, and the results of the analysis are used to derive the cross-modulation coefficient for a \pi -type attenuator with three p-in diodes.

Distortion Modeling of Feedback Two-Stage Amplifier Compensated With Miller Capacitor and Nulling Resistor

TL;DR: Inspired by traditional Rosenstark method, a nonlinear signal-flow-based method has been developed and based on the proposed method, the nonlinear coefficients of each gain stage can be evaluated exactly and the rules of cascading, feedback can be found conveniently.

Functional Analysis Applied to Nonlinear Feedback Systems

TL;DR: An operator theory is outlined for the general, nonlinear, feedback loop and it is shown that feedback reduces distortion for band-limited inputs and an iteration whose rate of convergence is optimized is derived.
