TLDR
In this paper, an intervening variable, activity-related-attention (ARA), representing the arousal level, is proposed as an intervening Variable linking job characteristics to job outcomes. But, it was found that ARA was found to contribute little to job-related attentional states.
Abstract
Activity-related-attention (ARA), representing the arousal level, is proposed as an intervening variable linking job characteristics to job outcomes. Two initial studies evaluated a new ARA state questionnaire assessing job-related attentional states. Worker responses displayed high internal consistency and were related to job satisfaction as well as to differences between mundane and enjoyable activities. Student responses displayed high test-retest correlations over a 2-week period. The third study compared the relative role of attention/arousal vs. the critical psychological states (CPS) appearing in Hackman and Oldham's (1976) job characteristics model. Questionnaires completed by 119 employees dealt with (1) job characteristics, (2) job outcomes of work satisfaction, effort, and performance, and (3) ARA state, and CPS. Regression analyses indicated that CPS tended to have a stronger mediating role than ARA in the relation between job characteristics and outcomes. However, ARA was found to contribute ...

Integrating Motivational, Social, and Contextual Work Design Features: A Meta-Analytic Summary and Theoretical Extension of the Work Design Literature

TL;DR: The authors developed and meta-analytically examined hypotheses designed to test and extend work design theory by integrating motivational, social, and work context characteristics to suggest numerous opportunities for the continued development of work design Theory and practice.

The Critical Psychological States: An Underrepresented Component in Job Characteristics Model Research

TL;DR: The mediating role of the critical psychological states (CPS) in the job characteristics model was examined in two studies as mentioned in this paper, and the results provided the strongest support for a job characteristics modeI that allowed the core job dimensions to have direct and indirect effects on personal and work outcomes, further supporting the Study 1 finding that the CPS were partial mediator variables.

The mediating role of job involvement in the relationship between job characteristics and organizational citizenship behavior.

TL;DR: Investigating the mediating process of job involvement in the relationship between job characteristics and OCB shows that the 3 job characteristics (i.e., task identity, task significance, and autonomy) positively influenced the display of an employee's OCB, whereas skill variety had a negative effect on OCB.

A review of research on the job characteristics model and the attendant job diagnostic survey

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluated the validity of the Job Characteristics Model (Hackman & Oldham, 1980) by reviewing relevant studies of the model and found that the dimensionality of the job characteristics is best represented by the five-factor solution as proposed by the model.

Motivation through the Design of Work: Test of a Theory.

TL;DR: In this paper, a model is proposed that specifies the conditions under which individuals will become internally motivated to perform effectively on their jobs, focusing on the interaction among three classes of variables: (a) the psychological states of employees that must be present for internally motivated work behavior to develop; (b) the characteristics of jobs that can create these psychological states; and (c) the attributes of individuals that determine how positively a person will respond to a complex and challenging job.

TL;DR: Theoretical models for enjoyment have been used in the 25th anniversary edition of the first edition of as discussed by the authors, with a focus on the rewards of car activities. But they do not consider the effects of flow deprivation.
