TLDR
This work proposes that authigenic carbonate, produced in sediment pore fluids during early diagenesis, has played a major role in the carbon cycle in the past and presents a framework for interpreting the carbon isotopic composition of sedimentary rocks.Abstract:
We present a framework for interpreting the carbon isotopic composition of sedimentary rocks, which in turn requires a fundamental reinterpretation of the carbon cycle and redox budgets over Earth's history. We propose that authigenic carbonate, produced in sediment pore fluids during early diagenesis, has played a major role in the carbon cycle in the past. This sink constitutes a minor component of the carbon isotope mass balance under the modern, high levels of atmospheric oxygen but was much larger in times of low atmospheric O(2) or widespread marine anoxia. Waxing and waning of a global authigenic carbonate sink helps to explain extreme carbon isotope variations in the Proterozoic, Paleozoic, and Triassic.read more

The end-Triassic negative δ 13 C excursion: A lithologic test
TL;DR: In this article, the uniqueness of the relationship between the carbonate-poor lithology and the δ 13 C signal was tested by comparing the geochemistry of the extinction marl with two Upper Triassic carbonatepoor beds from lower positions within the same stratigraphic sections.

TL;DR: High-resolution carbon isotope measurements of multiple stratigraphic sections in south China demonstrate that the pronounced carbon isotopic excursion at the Permian-Triassic boundary was not an isolated event but the first in a series of large fluctuations that continued throughout the Early Triassic before ending abruptly early in the Middle Triassic.

The abundance of 13c in marine organic matter and isotopic fractionation in the global biogeochemical cycle of carbon during the past 800 ma
TL;DR: For the later Neoproterozoic, from 800 to 543 Ma (346 analyses), from the Cambrian through the Jurassic (1616 analyses), and from the Cretaceous and Cenozoic (2493 analyses) the abundance of 13 C in marine organic matter has been compiled as discussed by the authors.
