- Vol. 308, Iss: 7987, pp 656-657
TLDR
A gonococcus was isolated from the vagina of a woman with pelvic inflammatory disease and produced a beta-lactamase that conferred resistance to penicillin, ampicillin, and cephaloridine, the only one to which the organism was resistant.

Antimicrobial Resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae in the 21st Century: Past, Evolution, and Future

TL;DR: By understanding the evolution, emergence, and spread of AMR in N. gonorrhoeae, including its molecular and phenotypic mechanisms, resistance to antimicrobials used clinically can be anticipated, and future methods for genetic testing for AMR might permit region-specific and tailor-made antimicrobial therapy, the design of novel antimicroBials to circumvent the resistance problems can be undertaken more rationally.
Journal ArticleDOI

Emergence of multiply resistant pneumococci.

TL;DR: Carriers of Types 6A and 19A penicillin-resistant pneumococci, resistant to antibiotic concentrations ranging between 0.12 and 4 microgram per milliliter were found in 29 of 543 pediatric patients and 2 of 434 hospital staff members in Johannesburg in July, 1977.

Recommendations for the Laboratory-Based Detection of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae — 2014

TL;DR: The performance of nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) with respect to overall sensitivity, specificity, and ease of specimen transport is better than that of any of the other tests available for the diagnosis of chlamydial and gonococcal infections.
Journal ArticleDOI

Evolution and spread of antibiotic resistance

TL;DR: Antibiotic resistance is a clinical and socioeconomical problem that is here to stay and it is important to identify organisms with low level resistance that otherwise may constitute the genetic platform for development of higher resistance levels.
Journal ArticleDOI

Streptococcus pneumoniæ resistant to penicillin and chloramphenicol

TL;DR: In this article, three cases of meningitis and two cases of septicaemia were caused by pneumococci resistant to the penicillins/cephalosporins and chloramphenicol.

The use of analytical isoelectric focusing for detection and identification of beta-lactamases.

TL;DR: Isoelectric focusing can be used to observe the transfer of beta-lactamases carried by R factors and it is shown that R that have not been distinguished from one another biochemically or immunologically can be differentiated by isoelectric focusing.

Identification of beta-lactamases by analytical isoelectric focusing: correlation with bacterial taxonomy.

Margaret Matthew, +1 more
- 01 May 1976 -
TL;DR: Since β-lactamases may be universally produced by bacteria, separation of the enzymes by analytical isoelectric focusing could be used in bacterial taxonomy.
