TLDR
Current low-dose OCs were found to have similar impact on the endogenous androgen metabolism with significant decreases of serum testosterone, DHT, A, and DHEA-S, which may be equally beneficial in women with androgen related syndromes such as acne and hirsutism.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

TL;DR: It is of interest to realize that polycystic ovary syndrome has moved from a histology diagnosis of ovarian tissue to a heterogeneous clinical syndrome, to a reproductive endocrine abnormality with elevated serum luteinizing hormone and androgen levels, and to a metabolic disease characterized by hyperinsulinemia and dyslipidemia.

Evaluation and Treatment of Hirsutism in Premenopausal Women: An Endocrine Society Clinical Practice Guideline

TL;DR: The Task Force suggests testing for elevated androgen levels in women with moderate or severe hirsutism or hirsUTism of any degree when it is sudden in onset, rapidly progressive, or associated with other abnormalities such as menstrual dysfunction, obesity, or clitoromegaly.

Endogenous Hormones and Ovarian Cancer: Epidemiology and Current Hypotheses

TL;DR: The observed tendency for an increased risk with androgens from ovarian origin (in premenopausal women), the lack of association with adrenal androgens, and the relatively weak associations observed with obesity, hormonal replacement therapy use, and endogenous hormones after menopause suggest that ovarian synthesis of sex steroids rather than their circulating levels may be etiologically important.

Effect of four different oral contraceptives on various sex hormones and serum-binding globulins

TL;DR: In conclusion, the DNG- containing OCs caused a higher rise in SHBG and TBG levels than the LNG-containing preparation, and the effects on CBG suggest a lesser hepatic effect of 2 mg EV as compared to 20 or 30 microg EE.

The effect of combined oral contraception on testosterone levels in healthy women: a systematic review and meta-analysis

TL;DR: COCs decrease circulating levels of total T and free T and increase SBHG concentrations, and suppressive effects on T levels were not different when comparing different types of progestins.

Thromboembolic Disease and the Steroidal Content of Oral Contraceptives. A Report to the Committee on Safety of Drugs

TL;DR: The combined results showed an excess of cases of thromboembolism at the highest dose of oestrogen, which is of special interest since previous studies have failed to provide clear evidence of a relationship between oral contraceptives and this condition.

Progestogens and cardiovascular reactions associated with oral contraceptives and a comparison of the safety of 50- and 30-microgram oestrogen preparations.

T W Meade, +2 more
- 10 May 1980 -
TL;DR: There is a case for minimising the dose of progestogen to reduce the chances of thromboembolism within the range of preparations currently in use, however, there are no grounds for major changes in oral contraceptive practice.

Rise in female-initiated sexual activity at ovulation and its suppression by oral contraceptives.

TL;DR: Married women who used contraceptive devices other than oral contraceptives experienced a significant increase in their sexual behavior at the time of ovulation, and women using oral contraceptives did not show a rise in female-initiated sexual activity at the corresponding time in their menstrual cycles.

Multiple testing in clinical trials.

TL;DR: The main emphasis is on the concept of the multiple level of significance (controlling the experiment, or family error in the strong sense) which can be achieved by applying the principle of closed tests.

Stepwise Multiple Comparison Procedures

TL;DR: In this article, two stepwise multiple comparison significance tests are proposed to control the experimentwise type I error rate and compare these tests with some existing procedures, such as step-down and step-up.
