TLDR
Findings indicate that there is some correlation between Ca++ activity and DC potential in the cochlear endolymph in guinea pigs, and this should not be considered a cause for concern.
Abstract
We found changes in Ca++ activity and DC potential during the development of experimentally induced endolymphatic hydrops in guinea pigs. These findings indicate that there is some correlation between Ca++ activity and DC potential in the cochlear endolymph.

Phantom auditory perception (tinnitus): mechanisms of generation and perception

TL;DR: Existing theories and their extrapolation are presented, together with some new potential mechanisms of tinnitus generation, encompassing the involvement of calcium and calcium channels in cochlear function, with implications for malfunction and aging of the auditory and vestibular systems.

Supporting sensory transduction: cochlear fluid homeostasis and the endocochlear potential

TL;DR: This review covers cochlear fluid composition, the generation of the endocochlear potential, K+ secretion and cycling and its regulation, the role of gap junctions, mechanisms of acid–base homeostasis, and Ca2+ transport.

Salicylate-induced abnormal activity in the inferior colliculus of rats.

TL;DR: The evaluated spontaneous activity of 471 units from the external nucleus of the IC revealed that salicylate induces an increase of the spontaneous activity and the emergence of a bursting type of activity longer than 4 spikes, which is consistent with the hypothesis that GABA-mediated disinhibition is involved in the processing of tinnitus-related neuronal activity.

Calcium gradients in inner ear endolymph.

TL;DR: Large concentration differences exist between different compartments, including a more than twofold increase along the length of the cochlea, and endolymph is extremely inhomogenous with respect to calcium potentials.

Communication pathways to and from the inner ear and their contributions to drug delivery.

TL;DR: A better understanding of the pathways for drug movements in and out of the ear will enable better intervention strategies.

Experimental blockage of the endolymphatic duct and sac and its effect on the inner ear of the guinea pig. A study on endolymphatic hydrops.

TL;DR: The present communication reports the results of a longer term experiment with guinea pigs kept up to 14 months, and includes both light and electron microscopic findings on the physiological processes in the development of endolymphatic hydrops.

Very low calcium content of cochlear endolymph, an extracellular fluid.

TL;DR: It is reported here that the cochlear endolymph calcium occurs almost entirely in the non-complexed state at a concentration of 3×10−5 M in the rat, which is substantially below the usual extracellular concentration, and must influence the function of the receptor pole membranes and might well affect the role of calcium in the transduction process in the Cochlea.

Is an Imbalanced Calcium-Homeostasis Responsible for the Experimentally Induced Endolymphatic Hydrops?

TL;DR: Investigations show that, at least for experimental hydrops, an imbalanced homeostasis of Ca exists that may be responsible for the enlargement of the endolymphatic space.
