Journal ArticleDOI

Ferroelasticity and related properties of crystals

TL;DR: In this paper, the main concepts used in the description of ferroelasticity and other related properties of crystals, viz. ferrobielasticity, ferro-astoelectricity and ferromagneto-elastic properties, are reviewed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Dielectric spectroscopy of paraelectric soft modes

TL;DR: In this article, the experimental dielectric spectra of sixteen ferroelectrics of both displacive and order-disorder type were obtained using BWO spectromctry in the 3-30 cm-1 region.
Journal ArticleDOI

Evidence for strain-induced ferroelectric order in epitaxial thin-film KTaO3.

TL;DR: The existence of strain-induced ferroelectric order in quantum paraelectric KTaO3 is demonstrated by combining experimental investigations of epitaxial K TaO3 films and density-functional-theory calculations, and it is suggested that a region of short-range polar order might appear in the strain-temperature phase diagrams.
Journal ArticleDOI

Optical detection of symmetry breaking on a nanoscale in SrTiO3:Ca

TL;DR: In this paper, spontaneous and field-induced linear birefringence is measured at low temperatures on singledomained single crystals of weakly doped SrTiO3:Ca (x = 0·002 and 0·007) in order to investigate polar ordering processes near to Tc ≈ 4 and 18 K, respectively.

Acoustic Fields and Waves in Solids

Bert A. Auld
TL;DR: In this article, the authors apply the material developed in the Volume One to various boundary value problems (reflection and refraction at plane surfaces, composite media, waveguides and resonators).
Journal ArticleDOI

Behavior of the Electronic Dielectric Constant in Covalent and Ionic Materials

TL;DR: In this article, a single effectiveoscillator fit was used to analyze refractive-index dispersion data below the interband absorption edge in more than 100 widely different solids and liquids.
Journal ArticleDOI

Oxygen‐Octahedra Ferroelectrics. I. Theory of Electro‐optical and Nonlinear optical Effects

TL;DR: In this article, a microscopic tensor theory of the electro-optical and nonlinear optical effects in oxygen-octahedra ferroelectrics is presented, which stresses the importance of the basic BO6 octahedron building block in this class of materials.
Journal ArticleDOI

Polaritons: the electromagnetic modes of media

TL;DR: In this article, a detailed discussion of the properties of bulk polaritons in an isotropic dielectric, with a single infrared active optical phonon is given, and the phonon and photon strength functions, which provide a useful means of characterizing the polariton are introduced.
Journal ArticleDOI

Polarization Fluctuations and the Optical-Absorption Edge in BaTi O 3

TL;DR: In this article, the authors showed that the band gap in BaTi is at most a weak function of temperature and that it does not display critical behavior, which is consistent with several recent experiments in displacive ferroelectrics.
