TLDR
Higher numbers of subthreshold PTSD symptoms were associated with greater impairment, comorbidity, and suicidal ideation, and more efforts are needed to identify subth threshold PTSD symptoms in clinical populations, epidemiologic surveys, and treatment studies.Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: Reliance on the categorical model of psychiatric disorders has led to neglected study of posttraumatic sequelae that fall short of full criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Substantial disability and suicidal risk is associated with subthreshold PTSD, but this association has not been well studied. In addition, no studies have examined the role of comorbidity in explaining disability and impairment in subthreshold PTSD. METHOD: On National Anxiety Disorders Screening Day 1997, 2,608 out of 9,358 individuals screened for affective and anxiety disorders at 1,521 sites across the United States reported at least one PTSD symptom of at least 1 month’s duration. Impairment, comorbid anxiety disorders, major depressive disorder, and rates of suicidality were determined and compared for individuals with no, one, two, three, or four (full PTSD) symptoms on a screening questionnaire. Regression analyses examined the relative contribution of subthreshold PTSD and comorbid disorders to impair...read more

Prevalence and Axis I comorbidity of full and partial posttraumatic stress disorder in the United States: results from Wave 2 of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions.
TL;DR: Examination of lifetime Axis I psychiatric comorbidity of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults found PTSD and partial PTSD were associated with elevated lifetime rates of mood, anxiety, and substance use disorders, and suicide attempts.

Anxiety Disorders and Risk for Suicidal Ideation and Suicide Attempts A Population-Based Longitudinal Study of Adults
Jitender Sareen,Brian J. Cox,Tracie O. Afifi,Ron de Graaf,Gordon J.G. Asmundson,Margreet ten Have,Murray B. Stein +6 more
TL;DR: This is the first study to demonstrate that a preexisting anxiety disorder is an independent risk factor for subsequent onset of suicidal ideation and attempts, and clearly demonstrate that comorbid anxiety disorders amplify the risk of suicide attempts in persons with mood disorders.

Psychotherapy for Military-Related PTSD: A Review of Randomized Clinical Trials.
TL;DR: In military and veteran populations, trials of the first-line trauma-focused interventions CPT and prolonged exposure have shown clinically meaningful improvements for many patients with PTSD, however, nonresponse rates have been high, many patients continue to have symptoms, and trauma- focused interventions show marginally superior results compared with active control conditions.

Trends of Probable Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in New York City after the September 11 Terrorist Attacks
Sandro Galea,David Vlahov,Heidi S. Resnick,Jennifer Ahern,Ezra Susser,Joel Gold,Michael J. Bucuvalas,Dean G. Kilpatrick +7 more
TL;DR: Data suggest a rapid resolution of most of the probable PTSD symptoms in the general population of New York City in the first 6 months after the attacks, suggesting the psychological consequences of a large-scale disaster in a densely populated urban area may extend beyond persons directly affected by the disaster to persons in thegeneral population.

636,120 Ways to Have Posttraumatic Stress Disorder:
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the DSM–IV criteria listed for PTSD have a high level of symptom profile heterogeneity, and new directions in research are discussed that can provide better information regarding both clinical and nonclinical behavioral heterogeneity in response to potentially traumatic and common stressful life events.

The measurement of observer agreement for categorical data

TL;DR: A general statistical methodology for the analysis of multivariate categorical data arising from observer reliability studies is presented and tests for interobserver bias are presented in terms of first-order marginal homogeneity and measures of interob server agreement are developed as generalized kappa-type statistics.

Posttraumatic stress disorder in the National Comorbidity Survey.
TL;DR: Progress in estimating age-at-onset distributions, cohort effects, and the conditional probabilities of PTSD from different types of trauma will require future epidemiologic studies to assess PTSD for all lifetime traumas rather than for only a small number of retrospectively reported "most serious" traumAs.

Traumatic events and posttraumatic stress disorder in an urban population of young adults
TL;DR: Life-style differences associated with differential exposure to situations that have a high risk for traumatic events and personal predispositions to the PTSD effects of traumatic events might be responsible for a substantial part of PTSD in this population.

Prevalence of civilian trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder in a representative national sample of women
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors assessed the prevalence of crime and non-crime civilian traumatic events, lifetime posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and PTSD in the past 6 months in a sample of U.S. adult women.
