TLDR
A review of the fundamental flow properties and processes in experimentally deformed natural and synthetic halite single crystals and polycrystalline aggregates is presented in this article, where a representative steady-state flow law determined for natural aggregates and maximum natural deviatoric stresses deduced from subgrain sizes are applied briefly to considerations of creep in waste repositories and of salt dome dynamics.

Radar interferometry and its application to changes in the Earth's surface

TL;DR: In this paper, a review of the use of radar interferometry to measure changes in the Earth's surface has exploded in the early 1990s, and a practical summary explains the techniques for calculating and manipulating interferograms from various radar instruments, including the four satellites currently in orbit: ERS-1, ERS2, JERS-1 and RADARSAT.
Journal ArticleDOI

Rheology of the lithosphere: Selected topics

TL;DR: In this article, the authors review recent results concerning the rheology of the lithosphere with special attention to the following topics: flexure of the oceanic lithosphere, deformation of the continental lithosphere resulting from vertical surface loads and forces applied at plate margins, rheological stratification of the continents, strain localization and shear zone development, and strain-induced crystallographic preferred orientations and anisotropies in body-wave velocities.
Journal ArticleDOI

The role of salt in fold-and-thrust belts

TL;DR: The role of salt in fold-and-thrust belts is discussed in this article, where it is shown that salt can provide an extremely weak horizon within which a basal detachment can form and along which only a relatively small shear traction can be supported.

A Practical Guide to Rock Microstructure

TL;DR: In this article, a glossary of microstructural terms for sedimentary and metamorphic rocks is presented, along with a discussion of the relationship between sedimentary, igneous and deformed rocks.

A first report on deformation-mechanism maps

TL;DR: Deformations-mechanism maps as discussed by the authors display the fields of stress and temperature in which a particular mechanism of plastic flow is dominant, i.e., dislocation glide, diffusional flow and dislocation creep.

Mechanical behavior of crystalline solids at elevated temperature

TL;DR: In this paper, the mechanical behavior of crystalline solids at elevated temperatures is discussed, including the creep properties of metals, solid solutions and two phase alloys, and the properties of two-phase alloys.

Hydrolytic Weakening of Quartz and Other Silicates

TL;DR: Griggs and Blacic as discussed by the authors showed that water-weakened synthetic quartz deforms at a critical temperature dependent on the water content, varying from 380°C at 0.13% to 1070°C with a rate of 0.0015%.

Strength and structure under hot-working conditions

TL;DR: The main feature of hot working is that extremely large strains are applied to materials at high rates of strain at temperatures above ∼ 0.6Tm, where Tm is the melting temperature in degrees Kelvin this article.
