Abstract
Our purpose is to clarify the microfoundations of performance in dynamic environments. A key premise is that the microfoundational link from organization, strategy, and dynamic capabilities to performance centers on how leaders manage the fundamental tension between efficiency and flexibility. We develop several insights. First, regarding structure, we highlight that organizations often drift toward efficiency, and so balancing efficiency and flexibility comes, counterintuitively, through unbalancing to favor flexibility. Second, we argue that environmental dynamism, rather than being simply stable or dynamic, is a multidimensional construct with dimensions that uniquely influence the importance and ease of balancing efficiency and flexibility. Third, we outline how executives balance efficiency and flexibility through cognitively sophisticated, single solutions rather than by simply holding contradictions. Overall, we go beyond the caricature of new organizational forms as obsessed with fluidity and the simplistic view of routines as the microfoundation of performance. Rather, we contribute a more accurate view of how leaders effectively balance between efficiency and flexibility by emphasizing heuristics-based “strategies of simple rules,” multiple environmental realities, and higher-order “expert” cognition. Together, these insights seek to add needed precision to the microfoundations of performance in dynamic environments.

Strategy-as-Practice: Taking Social Practices Seriously

TL;DR: In this article, a review of research in Strategy-as-Practice (SAP) is presented and five directions for the further development of the practice perspective are outlined: placing agency in a web of practices, recognizing the macro-institutional nature of practices and focusing attention on emergence in strategy-making, exploring how the material matters, and promoting critical analysis.

Microfoundations of routines and capabilities: individuals, processes, and structure

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify three primary components underlying routines and capabilities: individuals, social processes, and structure, and discuss how these components, and their interactions, may affect routine and capability.

Structural Differentiation and Ambidexterity: The Mediating Role of Integration Mechanisms

TL;DR: The findings suggest that the previously asserted direct effect of structural differentiation on ambidexterity operates through informal senior team and formal organizational integration mechanisms, and contributes to a greater clarity and better understanding of how organizations may effectively pursue exploration and exploitation simultaneously to achieve ambideXterity.

The Microfoundations Movement in Strategy and Organization Theory

TL;DR: The microfoundations movement in macro management as mentioned in this paper has received increased attention in strategy and organization theory over the past decade, and the micro-foundations research has been widely studied.

Rational heuristics: the ‘simple rules’ that strategists learn from process experience

TL;DR: A novel method to measure explicit learning is used, and the learned content of six technology-based ventures from three diverse countries as they internationalize is tracked, highlighting the rationality of heuristics as strategy, capability creation as the cognitive transition from novice to expert heuristic, and simplification cycling as a critical dynamic capability for sustaining competitive advantage.

Problem solving and the development of abstract categories in programming languages

TL;DR: Qualitative and quantitative measures revealed clear but different subjective organization in the two groups; the novices used a syntax-based organization, whereas the experts used a more abstract hierarchical organization based on principles of program function.

Change in the Presence of Residual Fit: Can Competing Frames Coexist?

TL;DR: The results suggest that the competing frames of threat and opportunity can coexist within the firm when it creates organizationally differentiated subunits, minimizes the need to integrate competing frames at the subunit level, enabling different behaviors to be enacted simultaneously across different units of the firm.

Organizational Linkages for Surviving Technological Change: Complementary Assets, Middle Management, and Ambidexterity

TL;DR: This paper develops a conceptual framework in which the ability to build and leverage organizational linkages involving the new technology and its complementary assets is essential for a successful technological transition and highlights the importance of middle management in creating and maintaining these linkages.

Psychology of Learning and Behavior

Presumptive Adaptation and the Effectiveness of Knowledge Transfer

TL;DR: It is found that presumptive adaptation stalls network growth while a conservative approach to adaptation, which basically entails close adherence to the original practice, results in remarkably rapid network growth.
