Cutting tool application of ceria-zirconia

Abstract: Transformations between the tetragonal and monoclinic phases of stabilized zirconia, popularly known as transformation toughening, have been widely studied. The transformation response of these phases to temperature and stress are quite different and hence their transformation response to an environment such as metal cutting, where both temperature and stress effects are involved simultaneously, is of interest. Since any processing may lead to transformations and phase changes, there has been no report on the application of these transformation toughening materials. The present paper deals with the techniques of fabricating a ceramic cutting tool based on ceria stabilized zirconia without phase destruction. The machining performance of this tool in machining cast iron is evaluated and its transformation behaviour in the metal cutting environment is studied.

Abstract: The effect of grinding-induced damage, on the strength of a yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) and a zirconia-tough-ened alumina (ZTA) was investigated. The four-point flexure test was used to measure fracture strength as a function of grinding conditions. Flexure bar specimens were prepared by surface grinding transverse to the tensile stress direction in flexure testing. Two series of grinding experiments were performed. In the first series, four wheels with diamond particle sizes ranging from 25 to 180 μ,m were used to grind specimens at a fixed depth of cut. The strength of the Y-TZP decreased slightly with increasing diamond particle size. For ZTA the strength loss was increased as diamond particle size was increased. In the second series, one grinding wheel with a diamond particle size of 180 μm was used to grind specimens at a depth of cut per pass ranging from 2.5 to 100 μm. Abstract: Zirconia toughened aluminas (ZTAs) with their enhanced transverse rupture strength and fracture toughness are more widely applicable and more productive than plain alumina ceramics and cermets in metal cutting applications. The development of Ce-transformation toughened zirconia (TTZ) based alumina ceramic-ceramic composite (ZTA) for machining applications has resulted in a cutting tool which can be used in a finishing operation even at relatively low cutting speeds, which is usually the range for carbide cutting tools.

Abstract: The use of ceramic materials in science and industry is becoming increasingly widespread. As discussed in Chap. 4, ceramic materials have important advantages over metals and polymers in electronic devices at high temperatures or in corrosive environments. This chapter will briefly review structural, refractory, energy production, biotechnological, and electronic applications of ceramic materials. Research and development efforts will continue to expand the applications of ceramic materials. Thus, it should be noted that many applications that are termed “potential” here may soon become actual applications, and many new ones will be added to the current list of applications.

Abstract: A nonlinear calibration curve for volume fraction vs integrated intensity ratio was obtained for the monoclinic-tetragonal ZrO2 system by using X-ray powder pattern-fitting and pattern-decomposition techniques. The empirical equation agrees well with the theoretical one. By using this equation, the deviation from linearity (6.8% maximum) resulting from the intensity difference of corresponding reflections of the two phases can be estimated quite accurately.

Abstract: Main characteristics of martensitic transformations in metals and alloys are described, and available data on the monoclinic-tetragonal transformation in ZrO/sub 2/ are critically evaluated. Kinetics, thermal hysteresis, tetragonal -- cubic transformation, metastable high-temperature phases, and pressure and irradiationinduced transformation are discussed. Abstract: The strength and fracture toughness of cerium oxide containing tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Ce-TZP) were studied. The thermal stability of Ce-TZP was also studied by low temperature thermal cycling and aging tests in air and in hot aqueous solution. Ce-TZP (12 mol% cerium oxide) showed very high fracture toughness and inelastic fracture behavior and was resistant to phase transformation during low temperature aging.
