TLDR
Grosz and Farmer as mentioned in this paper showed that an anxiety state can be induced by elevating blood lactate concentration, which is an extension and refinement of the hypothesis of Pius and McClure.
Abstract
PITTS' AND McCLURE'S LACTATE-ANXIETY STUDY REVISITED DEAR Sm, Grosz and Farmer (Journal, April 1972, 120, 4:5—8) have reported the results of an interesting study showing that anxiety symptoms can be preci pitated by the production of metabolic alkalosis. Unfortunately, they present their results as a refuta tion of the previous conclusions of Pitts and McClure (New Eng.3. Med. 1967, 27, :329—36,) that an anxiety state can be induced by elevating blood lactate concentration. It is true that the data of Grosz and Farmer, if confirmed, would lead to a new interpretation of the previous conclusions regarding blood lactate. However, these newer findings should be viewed simply as an extension and refinement of the hypothesis of Pius and McClure. The tendency in psychiatric research to view an incomplete or partially correct theory as an error discourages investi

Fenfluramine: a review of its pharmacological properties and therapeutic efficacy in obesity.

TL;DR: The majority of patients tolerate fenfluramine satisfactorily, although some patients may have to discontinue the drug because of troublesome gastro-intestinal problems, diarrhoea, drowsiness or dizziness, and it probably has little abuse potential.

Brain Serotonin Neurotoxicity and Primary Pulmonary Hypertension From Fenfluramine and Dexfenfluramine: A Systematic Review of the Evidence

TL;DR: Fenfluramine and dexfen fluramine have been demonstrated to damage brain serotonin neurons in animal studies and are associated with an increased risk of PPH.

Drugs and Depression

TL;DR: In those patients presenting with depression, it is important to review the current drug therapy in order to assess the part played by these drugs in the development of the depression, and drug therapy should be adjusted appropriately.

Behavioral effects of serotonin neurotoxins: an overview*

TL;DR: The evidence regarding the nature of the various behavioral changes that result after administration of neurotoxic drugs is reviewed and the behavioral effects of these drugs to those seen in animals subjected to other surgical, pharmacologic, or dietary manipulations of brain serotonergic neurotransmission are compared.

Drug-induced depression. Incidence, avoidance and management.

TL;DR: Clinicians are frequently required to make clinical judgements about the aetiology of patients’ depressive symptoms in the absence of definitive scientific information about the role of drugs.
