Urine samples from 21 patients with visceral leishmaniasis were examined for the presence of Leishmania donovani soluble antigen and antibody by double counter-current immunoelectrophoresis.Abstract:
Urine samples from 21 patients with visceral leishmaniasis were examined for the presence of Leishmania donovani soluble antigen and antibody by double counter-current immunoelectrophoresis. 19 samples revealed both antigen and antibody (IgM in 5 and IgG in all samples). 2 urine samples collected 10 and 13 days after Glucantime treatment revealed only antibody (IgG), not soluble antigen.read more

Multicolored led lighting method and apparatus
George G. Mueller,Ihor A. Lys +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the systems and methods described in this paper relate to LED systems capable of generating light, such as for illumination or display purposes, and the resulting illumination may be controlled by a computer program to provide complex, predesigned patterns of light in virtually any environment.

Leishmania and human immunodeficiency virus coinfection: the first 10 years.
Jorge Alvar,Carmen Cañavate,Beatriz Gutiérrez-Solar,Maribel Jiménez,Fernando Laguna,Rogelio López-Vélez,Ricardo Molina,Javier Moreno +7 more
TL;DR: Over 850 Leishmania-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) coinfection cases have been recorded, the majority in Europe, where 7 to 17% of HIV-positive individuals with fever have amastigotes, suggesting that Leishmanniasis-infected individuals without symptoms will express symptoms of leishmaniasis if they become immunosuppressed.

Latex agglutination test for the detection of urinary antigens in visceral leishmaniasis
Zamil J Attar,Michael L. Chance,Sayda El-Safi,James Carney,Ahmed A. Azazy,Maha El-Hadi,Cibele Dourado,Marcel Hommel +7 more
TL;DR: Compared to microscopy, KATEX performed better than any single serological test in predicting positivity and a particularly good result was obtained by combining KATEx and the direct agglutination test (DAT).

Comparison of New Diagnostic Tools for Management of Pediatric Mediterranean Visceral Leishmaniasis
Israel Cruz,Carmen Chicharro,Javier Nieto,Begofia Bailo,Carmen Cañavate,Maria-Concepcion Figueras,Jorge Alvar +6 more
TL;DR: Results obtained suggest that antibody detection techniques, the antigen detection in urine (KAtex kit), and Leishmania nested PCR analysis of the blood could be used for diagnosis of the first clinical episode of pediatric visceral leishmaniasis.

Antigenuria in visceral leishmaniasis: detection and partial characterisation of a carbohydrate antigen.
TL;DR: The results suggest that the detected antigen is highly specific and diagnostic for VL, and is the target antigen in the previously described latex agglutination test ('KATEX').

Serological investigations on Indian kala-azar.
TL;DR: Detailed serological investigations were carried out in forty-nine active kala-azar (KA) cases in North Bihar, India and IgG-ELISA appeared to be a highly specific and sensitive serodiagnostic method particularly for the early detection of KA cases.

Glomerular involvement in human kala-azar. A light, immunofluorescent, and electron microscopic study based on kidney biopsies.
TL;DR: The pattern of the lesion resembles that described in the kidney of human cases of hepatosplenic schistosomiasis, and the distribution of the deposits suggests that relatively large, poorly soluble complexes formed either in the presence of excess antigen or, under certain circumstances, in the absence of excess antibody, are trapped in the glomerular capillaries.

Purification of soluble immune complexes from serum using polymethylmetacrylate beads coated with conglutinin or C1q. Application to the analysis of the components of in vitro formed immune complexes and of immune complexes occurring in vivo during leishmaniasis.
Paolo Casali,Paul-Henri Lambert +1 more
TL;DR: Immune complexes formed in vivo were also purified by conglutinin column from the serum of a patient with disseminated leishmaniasis, and were found to contain anti-IgG and anti-leishmania antibodies.

Interstitial nephritis in human kala-azar
TL;DR: The renal histopathology of 21 patients admitted to hospital in São Paulo, Brazil, during the period 1960 through 1981 who either died or had a renal biopsy is presented, suggesting moderate and severe cortical intersitial damage contribute to the onset of renal insufficiency when severe clinical complications occur.

Immunological features of kala-azar.
TL;DR: Serum immunoglobulins, complement C3c, percentage of T and B cells, and skin reactivity to Leishmania were studied in ten cases of kala-azar; Immunoglobulin G was increased in a majority of these patients.
