TLDR
In this article, a procedure is presented for routine analysis of total nitrogen in solution which is similar to published methods using oxidation by potassium persulfate. But careful attention to pH, alkalinity, the neutralizing buffer, reaction vessels, and dilution factors have proved necessary.
Abstract
A procedure is presented for routine analysis of total nitrogen in solution which is similar to published methods using oxidation by potassium persulfate. Careful attention to pH, alkalinity, the neutralizing buffer, reaction vessels, and dilution factors have proved necessary. This modified method is acceptable for samples from fresh to oceanic waters, is accurate for organic compounds tested, has a maximum capability of 40 µM nitrogen in undiluted samples, and has a mid-range precision of ±2%.

Impact of submerged macrophytes on fish-zooplankton-phytoplankton interactions : large-scale enclosure experiments in a shallow eutrophic lake

TL;DR: The results suggest that fish predation has less impact on the zooplankton community in the more structured environment of macrophyte beds, particularly when the PVI exceeds 15–20%, and that the refuge capacity of Macrophytes decreases markedly with increasing fish density.

Nitrate and organic N analyses with second-derivative spectroscopy

TL;DR: The most widely accepted methods for N03 analysis include Cd reduction and ion chromatography (Am. Public Health Assoc. 1989), photo-oxidation (Armstrong et al., 1989), or persulfate digestion (Koroleff 1976; D’Elia et al. as mentioned in this paper ).

Organic nitrogen deposition on land and coastal environments: a review of methods and data

TL;DR: In this article, a global review of published reports of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in precipitation is presented, showing a land-to-sea gradient in organic nitrogen concentration over time.

Impact of nutrients and physical factors on the shift from cyanobacterial to chlorophyte dominance in shallow Danish lakes

TL;DR: It is suggested that chlorophyte dominance in hypertrophic shallow lakes is attributable to continuous input of nutrients and carbon from the sediment and exte...

Determination of total nitrogen in aqueous samples using persulfate digestion1

TL;DR: In this paper, the determination of total nitrogen in aqueous samples after potassium persulfate digestion compared favorably in both precision and nitrogen recovery with determinations obtained using Kjeldahl digestion.

Size separation of marine seston by membrane and glass‐fiber filters1

TL;DR: The average minimum sizes of particles retained by metal membranes (Selas Flotronics) and perforated polycarbonate membranes (General Electric Nuclepore) were similar to the stated pore sizes when relatively small seawater samples with moderate concentrations of particles were filtered.

Size classes of organic carbon in seawater

TL;DR: In this paper, four size classes of organic matter in seawater are investigated using carbon analyses, and it is suggested that this "subparticulate" class should be considered as colloidal organic matter.
