Diagnostic Accuracy and Safety of Semirigid Thoracoscopy in Exudative Pleural Effusions: A Meta-analysis
TLDR
Semirigid thoracoscopy is an efficacious and safe procedure in diagnosis of EPE and more well-designed trials are required to confirm the results of this study.About:

A randomized trial comparing the diagnostic yield of rigid and semirigid thoracoscopy in undiagnosed pleural effusions.
TL;DR: R rigid thoracoscopy was found to be superior to semirigid thoracoscope overall, but the diagnostic yield was similar if pleural biopsy could be successfully performed, and the number of complications were similar in the 2 groups.

Interferon Gamma Release Assays for Diagnosis of Pleural Tuberculosis: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
TL;DR: It is concluded that commercial IGRAs, performed either on whole-blood or pleural fluid samples, have poor diagnostic accuracy in patients suspected to have TPE.

Efficacy and Safety of Diagnostic Thoracoscopy in Undiagnosed Pleural Effusions
Xiao-Juan Wang,Yuan Yang,Zhen Wang,Li-Li Xu,Yan-Bing Wu,Jun Zhang,Zhaohui Tong,Huan-Zhong Shi +7 more
TL;DR: MT is an effective and safe procedure for diagnosing pleural effusions of undetermined causes and should be particularly helpful in the differential diagnosis of tuberculous Pleural effusion in areas with high tuberculosis prevalence.
Journal ArticleDOI
Diagnostic value and safety of medical thoracoscopy in tuberculous pleural effusion.
Zhen Wang,Li-Li Xu,Yan-Bing Wu,Xiao-Juan Wang,Yuan Yang,Jun Zhang,Zhaohui Tong,Huan-Zhong Shi +7 more
TL;DR: The data showed that medical thoracoscopy is a simple procedure with high diagnostic yield and excellent safety for the diagnosis of tuberculous pleural effusion.

Bias in meta-analysis detected by a simple, graphical test
TL;DR: Funnel plots, plots of the trials' effect estimates against sample size, are skewed and asymmetrical in the presence of publication bias and other biases Funnel plot asymmetry, measured by regression analysis, predicts discordance of results when meta-analyses are compared with single large trials.
Journal ArticleDOI
Meta-Analysis in Clinical Trials*
TL;DR: This paper examines eight published reviews each reporting results from several related trials in order to evaluate the efficacy of a certain treatment for a specified medical condition and suggests a simple noniterative procedure for characterizing the distribution of treatment effects in a series of studies.
Journal ArticleDOI
The meaning and use of the area under a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve.
TL;DR: A representation and interpretation of the area under a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve obtained by the "rating" method, or by mathematical predictions based on patient characteristics, is presented and it is shown that in such a setting the area represents the probability that a randomly chosen diseased subject is (correctly) rated or ranked with greater suspicion than a random chosen non-diseased subject.

Statistical Aspects of the Analysis of Data From Retrospective Studies of Disease
Nathan Mantel,William Haenszel +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the role and limitations of retrospective investigations of factors possibly associated with the occurrence of a disease are discussed and their relationship to forward-type studies emphasized, and examples of situations in which misleading associations could arise through the use of inappropriate control groups are presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
Operating characteristics of a rank correlation test for publication bias.
TL;DR: In this paper, an adjusted rank correlation test is proposed as a technique for identifying publication bias in a meta-analysis, and its operating characteristics are evaluated via simulations, and the test statistic is a direct statistical analogue of the popular funnel-graph.
