TLDR
The diversity of monogeneans from Southeast Asia was examined using information from the literature to show their diversity at different taxonomic levels, and Malayan fauna is considered to be representative of the Southeast Asian fauna.

Parasite biodiversity revisited: frontiers and constraints.

TL;DR: This review addresses four topical issues about parasite diversity and makes great strides toward explaining variation in parasite species richness among host species, by identifying basic host properties that are universal predictors of parasite richness, whatever the type of hosts or parasites.
Journal ArticleDOI

Dactylogyridean monogeneans of the siluriform fishes of the Old World

TL;DR: It is proposed that the Ancylodiscoidinae be raised to family status within the order Dactylogyridea to accommodate these 17 `ancyrocephalid' genera from siluriforms, together with Malayanodiscoides and Notopterodiscoide from notopterids.
Journal ArticleDOI

An annotated list of parasites (Isopoda, Copepoda, Monogenea, Digenea, Cestoda and Nematoda) collected in groupers (Serranidae, Epinephelinae) in New Caledonia emphasizes parasite biodiversity in coral reef fish.

TL;DR: It is hypothesized that the present results represent only a small part of the actual biodiversity, and it is predicted that New Caledonia has a biodiversity of 10 different parasite species and 30 host-parasite combinations per serranid.
Journal Article

Parasites of coral reef fish: how much do we know? With a bibliography of fish parasites in New Caledonia.

TL;DR: The present list is probably the most complete published account of parasite biodiversity of coral reef fishes, however, it is estimated that the present state of knowledge represents only 2% of the possible number of metazoan parasites of fish present in a coral reef environment.
Journal ArticleDOI

Parasite biodiversity in a coral reef fish: twelve species of monogeneans on the gills of the grouper Epinephelus maculatus (Perciformes: Serranidae) off New Caledonia, with a description of eight new species of Pseudorhabdosynochus (Monogenea: Diplectanidae).

TL;DR: Coral reefs are known for their high level of biodiversity, but parasite biodiversity has not been evaluated, and cases such as Epinephelus maculatus, described here, show that the numerical estimation of parasite biodiversity in coral reefs could reach more than ten times the number of fish species; consequently, the extinction of certain fish species from endangered coral reefs would result in the co-extinction of at least ten timesThe number of parasite species.
