A new bioassay for comparing the palatability to avian predators of monarch butterflies reared on various asclepiadaceous food plants containing cardiac glycosides indicates a palatability spectrum. The monarchs reared on one plant species are six times as emetic as those fed another, while those raised on an asclepiad which lacks cardiac glycosides are not emetic at all.read more

Interactions Among Three Trophic Levels: Influence of Plants on Interactions Between Insect Herbivores and Natural Enemies
TL;DR: It is argued that theory on insect-plant interactions cannot progress realistically without consideration of the third trophic level, and plants have many effects, direct and indirect, positive and negative, not only on herbivore but also on the enemies of herbivores.

Allomones and Kairomones: Transspecific Chemical Messengers
TL;DR: This work proposes to designate two major functional groupings by the terms allomone and kairomone, chosen as intentional parallels to the term pheromone for clear discussion of the field of chemical ecology.

The impact of plant secondary compounds on primate feeding behavior
TL;DR: The observed selectivity and preferences of primates for specific plant or insect species and parts are now viewed as strategies for dealing with the nutrient and secondary compound content variation in these foods.

Butterflies and plants: a study in coevolution
Paul R. Ehrlich,Peter H. Raven +1 more
TL;DR: The relationship between butterflies and their food plants is investigated, the examination of patterns of interaction between two major groups of organisms with a close and evident ecological relationship, such as plants and herbivores.

Plant poisons in a terrestrial food chain.
TL;DR: In the absence of complete metamorphosis in terrestrial insects, the adult food is likely to be the same as or similar to that of the nymph, with the result that the imago is not a pristine entity as far as food intake is concerned.

Cardenolides (Heart Poisons) in a Grasshopper feeding on Milkweeds
TL;DR: A North African grasshopper (Poekilocerus bufonius) with warning coloration and which feeds on milkweeds, contains cardenolides similar to those found in the plant.
