TLDR
A standardized oral hygiene protocol which includes the use of mechanical cleaning with a toothbrush may be a factor in the reduction of colonization of dental plaque with respiratory pathogens.

Oral hygiene care for critically ill patients to prevent ventilator‐associated pneumonia

TL;DR: High quality evidence from 18 RCTs shows that CHX mouthrinse or gel, as part of OHC, reduces the risk of VAP compared to placebo or usual care, which is equivalent to a number needed to treat for an additional beneficial outcome (NNTB) of 17, which indicates that for every 17 ventilated patients in intensive care receiving OHC including chlorhexidine, one outcome of V AP would be prevented.
Journal ArticleDOI

Reappraisal of routine oral care with chlorhexidine gluconate for patients receiving mechanical ventilation: systematic review and meta-analysis.

TL;DR: Routine oral care with chlor hexidine prevents nosocomial pneumonia in cardiac surgery patients but may not decrease ventilator-associated pneumonia risk in non-cardiac surgery patients, and chlorhexidine use does not affect patient-centered outcomes in either population.

Oral hygiene care for critically ill patients to prevent ventilator associated pneumonia [Intervention Protocol]

Selective digestive or oropharyngeal decontamination and topical oropharyngeal chlorhexidine for prevention of death in general intensive care: systematic review and network meta-analysis.

TL;DR: Selective digestive decontamination has a favourable effect on mortality in adult patients in general intensive care units and there is a possibility that chlorhexidine is associated with increased mortality in these patients.
Journal ArticleDOI

Toothbrushing for critically ill mechanically ventilated patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials evaluating ventilator-associated pneumonia.

TL;DR: In intubated, mechanically ventilated critically ill patients, toothbrushing did not significantly reduce the risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia overall and more research is needed on this aspect of oral care to evaluate its potential to decrease ventilators' associated pneumonia.

Applied Regression Analysis and Other Multivariable Methods

TL;DR: In this article, the authors compare two straight line regression models and conclude that the Straight Line Regression Equation does not measure the strength of the Straight-line Relationship, but instead is a measure of the relationship between two straight lines.
Journal ArticleDOI

Ventilator-associated pneumonia.

TL;DR: Appropriate antimicrobial treatment of patients with VAP significantly improves outcome, more rapid identification of infected patients and accurate selection of antimicrobial agents represent important clinical goals.
Journal ArticleDOI

Critical Care Medicine : Organizing and Staffing Intensive Care Units

TL;DR: An attempt has been made to direct the evolution of critical care medicine based on the author's personal experiences with the development of emergency care and intensive care programs during the past decade, and on review of the available literature.

Guidelines for Preventing Health-Care-- Associated Pneumonia, 2003 Recommendations of CDC and the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee

TL;DR: The new guidelines are designed to reduce the incidence of pneumonia and other severe, acute lower respiratory tract infections in acute-care hospitals and in other health-care settings (e.g., ambulatory and longterm care institutions) and other facilities where health care is provided.
Journal ArticleDOI

Chlorhexidine: is it still the gold standard?

TL;DR: By understanding the properties and limitations of the chlorhexidine molecule, the dental profession can ensure that the efficacy of the agent is maximized, and the side effects associated with the agent are minimized, allowing chlor hexidine to rightly remain the gold standard against which other antiplaque agents are measured.
