TLDR
In this paper , the authors investigate the relationship between financial development and ecological sustainability and demonstrate that financial development boosts ecological integrity and environmental sustainability over the long and short terms. But, their empirical analysis is based on the novel dynamic autoregressive distributed lag simulations approach for South Africa between 1960 and 2020.
Abstract
Abstract The extant literature has produced mixed evidence on the relationship between financial development and ecological sustainability. This work addresses this conundrum by investigating financial development’s direct and indirect consequences on ecological quality utilizing the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) methodological approach. Our empirical analysis is based on the novel dynamic autoregressive distributed lag simulations approach for South Africa between 1960 and 2020. The results, which used five distinct financial development measures, demonstrate that financial development boosts ecological integrity and environmental sustainability over the long and short terms. In the instance of South Africa, we additionally confirm the validity of the EKC theory. More importantly, the outcomes of the indirect channels demonstrate that financial development increases energy usage’s role in causing pollution while attenuating the detrimental impacts of economic growth, trade openness, and foreign direct investment on ecological quality. Moreover, the presence of an inadequate financial system is a requirement for the basis of the pollution haven hypothesis (PHH), which we examine using trade openness and foreign direct investment variables. PHH for both of these variables disappears when financial development crosses specified thresholds. Finally, industrial value addition destroys ecological quality while technological innovation enhances it. This research provides some crucial policy recommendations and fresh perspectives for South Africa as it develops national initiatives to support ecological sustainability and reach its net zero emissions goal.

The asymmetric effect of technological innovation on CO2 emissions in South Africa: New evidence from the QARDL approach

TL;DR: In this article , a quantile autoregressive distributed lag (QARDL) methodology was applied to deal with distributional asymmetry based on the location of CO2 emissions within its own distribution.

Bounds testing approaches to the analysis of level relationships

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed a new approach to the problem of testing the existence of a level relationship between a dependent variable and a set of regressors, when it is not known with certainty whether the underlying regressors are trend- or first-difference stationary.

Does Trade Cause Growth

TL;DR: This paper found that trade has a quantitatively large and robust, though only moderately statistically significant, positive effect on income and that countries' geographic characteristics have important effects on trade, and are plausibly uncorrelated with other determinants of income.

Understanding Interaction Models: Improving Empirical Analyses

TL;DR: A survey of the top three political science journals from 1998 to 2002 suggests that the execution of these models is often flawed and inferential errors are common as discussed by the authors, and that scholars follow the simple checklist of dos and don'ts for using multiplicative interaction models presented in this article.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined whether compositional changes in pollution arising from trade liberalization originate due to differences in capital-labor endowments and/or differences in environmental regulations.
