Factors affecting ultrasonic measurements in solid wood
Voichita Bucur,Isabelle Böhnke +1 more
TLDR
In this article, the attenuation coefficients of anisotropic wood were measured with the through-transmission technique and some experimental factors that can affect the determination of attenuation coefficient were related to the geometry of the radiation field, and to the scattering and absorption of ultrasonic energy by the solid.About:

Ultrasonic Measurements In Brazilian Hardwood
TL;DR: In this paper, a study of the application of ultrasound waves in wood with the purpose of evaluating the latter's mechanical properties is reported, based on the correlation between the speed of sound, modulus of elasticity and density.

Relationship between density and ultrasonic velocity in Brazilian tropical woods.
Fabiana de Oliveira,Almir Sales +1 more
TL;DR: The results obtained between species indicated that ultrasonic velocity tends to increase with increasing density, and within species also showed an increasing trend in ultrasonic Velocity as density increased, but the relationship was not as significant as it was for between species.

On the frequency dependence of the modulus of elasticity of wood
TL;DR: In this article, an improved version of the Zener model for viscoelasticity, which has lately been proposed by Pritz (1999), is used for predicting the VE of wood.

Resonance wood [Picea abies (L.) Karst.]--evaluation and prediction of violin makers' quality-grading.
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared the traditional knowledge and practical experience of violin makers with a material-science approach to objectively characterize the properties of resonance wood for musical instrument making, and found that luthiers are able to estimate wood quality related to visible features, but predictions of mechanical and acoustical properties proved to be very poor.

Breeding for improved growth and juvenile corewood stiffness in slash pine
TL;DR: The utility of in-tree velocity stiffness measurements to estimate the genetic control of corewood stiffness and to select for trees with superior growth and stiffness in a progeny trial of 139 families of slash pine, Pinus elliottii Engelm, is investigated.

Ultrasonic Attenuation Caused by Scattering in Polycrystalline Metals
TL;DR: In this paper, the grain size distributions and ultrasonic velocities in fine-grained specimens of several metals were determined and the experimental attenuation was in good quantitative as well as qualitative agreement with current theory.

Inhomogeneous wave generation and propagation in lossy anisotropic solids. Application to the characterization of viscoelastic composite materials
TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed a method for investigating some anisotropic media, such as composites, by the use of ultrasonic waves transmitted through a plate-shaped sample immersed in water.

The scattering of ultrasound by human tissues—Some theoretical models
TL;DR: Two ultrasonic scattering models for human tissue are suggested, one in which the homogeneities are discrete and the other an inhomogeneous continuum, emphasizing the need for more physical information about human tissue.

Reflection and transmission of acoustic plane waves on an immersed orthotropic and viscoelastic solid layer
TL;DR: In this article, a numerical method is proposed for computing reflection and transmission coefficients of plane waves for any incidence plane through an orthotropic, lossy solid layer, which is used to measure the nine coefficients of the complex stiffness matrix by using ultrasonic waves transmitted through a plate-shaped sample immersed in water.
