Fatigue crack growth, free vibrations, and breathing crack detection of aluminium alloy and steel beams

TLDR
In this paper, the authors deal with online controlled propagation and vibration-based detection of fatigue cracks in metal beams constituted of two different materials: 6082-T651 aluminium alloy and Fe430 steel.

How contact interactions may depend on the shape of Cauchy cuts in Nth gradient continua: approach “à la D’Alembert”

TL;DR: In this article, it is shown how to generalize Cauchy representation formulas for contact interactions to the case of Nth gradient continua, that is, continua in which the deformation energy depends on the Green-Saint-Venant tensor and all its N − 1 order gradients.
Journal ArticleDOI

Dynamic problems for metamaterials: Review of existing models and ideas for further research

TL;DR: In this article, the authors focus on the design of wave-guides aimed to control wave propagation in micro-structured continua, with particular attention to piezoelectromechanical structures, having a strong coupling between macroscopic motion and some internal degrees of freedom.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cracked beam identification by numerically analysing the nonlinear behaviour of the harmonically forced response

TL;DR: In this paper, a flexural forced vibration of a cantilever beam having a transverse surface crack extending uniformly along the width of the beam was performed to relate the nonlinear resonances to the crack presence, location, and depth.
Journal ArticleDOI

The postulations á la D’Alembert and á la Cauchy for higher gradient continuum theories are equivalent: a review of existing results

TL;DR: Some relevant literature on the subject is reviewed, discussing how the two postulations can be reconciled in the case of higher gradient theories and underline the importance of the concept of contact surface, edge and wedge s-order forces.

A variational model based on isogeometric interpolation for the analysis of cracked bodies

TL;DR: In this paper, a variational model for the analysis of crack evolution is presented, which considers strong discontinuities that evolve according to the principles of cohesive fracture mechanics, and a method for tracking the discontinuity is also proposed, based on a local distortion of the parametrization of the geometry obtained determining the position of the control points of the isogeometric interpolation.

The stress analysis of cracks handbook

TL;DR: The Stress Analysis of Cracks Handbook as mentioned in this paper provides a comprehensive, easy-to-access collection of elastic stress solutions for crack configurations, along with other relevant information, such as displacements, crack opening areas, basic stress functions source references, accuracy of solutions, and more.

Dynamics of Structures: Theory and Applications to Earthquake Engineering

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a single-degree-of-freedom (SDF) system, which is composed of a mass-spring-damper system and a non-viscous Damping Free Vibration (NFV) system.

A review of structural health monitoring literature 1996-2001

TL;DR: An updated review covering the years 1996 2001 will summarize the outcome of an updated review of the structural health monitoring literature, finding that although there are many more SHM studies being reported, the investigators, in general, have not yet fully embraced the well-developed tools from statistical pattern recognition.
Journal ArticleDOI

Identification of crack location and magnitude in a cantilever beam from the vibration modes

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a non-destructive testing method for crack identification, which requires amplitude measurements at two positions of the structure only and is applicable to all one-dimensional structures.
