Abstract
A federated database system (FDBS) is a collection of cooperating database systems that are autonomous and possibly heterogeneous. In this paper, we define a reference architecture for distributed database management systems from system and schema viewpoints and show how various FDBS architectures can be developed. We then define a methodology for developing one of the popular architectures of an FDBS. Finally, we discuss critical issues related to developing and operating an FDBS.

Adlet: an active document abstraction for multimedia information fusion

TL;DR: A new approach is described for the fusion of multimedia information based on the concept of active documents advertising on the Internet, whereby the metadata of a document travels in the network to seek out documents of interest to the parent document and, at the same time, advertises its parent document to other interested documents.

The PRODNET Federated Information Management Approach for Virtual Enterprise Support

TL;DR: The general information management requirements identified for the VE network in the PRODNET II project are described, and then the challenging design issues behind the development of the components of the federated information management system are presented.

Using Conceptual Graph Theory to Support Schema Integration

TL;DR: It is shown that it is easier to identify correspondences between schemas expressed in this modelling formalism than in schemas formulated in traditional modelling languages.

Element matching across data-oriented XML sources using a multi-strategy clustering model

TL;DR: This research has developed a comprehensive classification for schematic and semantic conflicts that can occur when reconciling related XML data from multiple sources and developed five heuristics for clustering data in the multi-dimensional metric space.

The entity-relationship model: toward a unified view of data

TL;DR: A data model, called the entity-relationship model, is proposed that incorporates some of the important semantic information about the real world and can be used as a basis for unification of different views of data: the network model, the relational model, and the entity set model.

A comparative analysis of methodologies for database schema integration

TL;DR: The aim of the paper is to provide first a unifying framework for the problem of schema integration, then a comparative review of the work done thus far in this area, providing a basis for identifying strengths and weaknesses of individual methodologies, as well as general guidelines for future improvements and extensions.
