Abstract
A federated database system (FDBS) is a collection of cooperating database systems that are autonomous and possibly heterogeneous. In this paper, we define a reference architecture for distributed database management systems from system and schema viewpoints and show how various FDBS architectures can be developed. We then define a methodology for developing one of the popular architectures of an FDBS. Finally, we discuss critical issues related to developing and operating an FDBS.

Integration of Web services into workflows through a multi-level schema architecture

TL;DR: This paper presents a design architecture for extracting the Web interface and the underlying workflows and business objects from a Web site in consecutive extraction phases, each phase resulting in a conceptual schema at one particular level in the architecture.

Merging databases: Problems and examples

TL;DR: This paper focuses on databases merging, which is one particular case of data fusion, and stresses the main problems raised by databases merging and presents some solutions.

Efficient delivery of web services

TL;DR: This dissertation addresses issues for the efficient access to Web databases and services with a new query model where queries are resolved by combining Web service invocations and proposes an optimization strategy based on aggregating Quality of Web service (QoWS) of different Web services.

Algebraic optimization of outerjoin queries

TL;DR: The benefits of query optimization are extended to a number of important database applications, such as federated databases, nested queries, and hierarchical views, for which outerjoin is a key component.

The entity-relationship model: toward a unified view of data

TL;DR: A data model, called the entity-relationship model, is proposed that incorporates some of the important semantic information about the real world and can be used as a basis for unification of different views of data: the network model, the relational model, and the entity set model.

A comparative analysis of methodologies for database schema integration

TL;DR: The aim of the paper is to provide first a unifying framework for the problem of schema integration, then a comparative review of the work done thus far in this area, providing a basis for identifying strengths and weaknesses of individual methodologies, as well as general guidelines for future improvements and extensions.
