Finite element method for mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication of journal‐bearing systems

TLDR
In this paper, a finite element model is presented for mixed lubrication of journal-bearing systems operating in adverse conditions, and the asperity effects on contact and lubrication at large eccentricity ratios are modelled.
Abstract
A finite element model is presented for mixed lubrication of journal-bearing systems operating in adverse conditions. The asperity effects on contact and lubrication at large eccentricity ratios are modelled. The elastic deformation due to both hydrodynamic and contact pressure, and the cavitation of the lubricant film are considered in the model system. Two verification problems with both theoretical and experimental comparisons are given to show the effectiveness of this model. Finally, a new example is presented which discusses the influence of waviness depth, secondary roughness, external force and shaft speed on the mixed lubrication. A study of friction in worn misaligned journal bearings under severe hydrodynamic lubrication

TL;DR: In this paper, a bearing is assumed to operate in the hydrodynamic region, at high eccentricities, wear depths, and angular misalignment, and the minimum film thickness is 5-10 times the surface finish.

Influence of Mixed-Lubrication and Rough Elastic-Plastic Contact on the Performance of Small Fluid Film Bearings

TL;DR: In this paper, a deterministic elastohydrodynamic (EHD) numerical model for small fluid film bearings functioning in the mixed lubrication regime is extended by considering the rough contact, and the simulation results are presented for a partial journal bearing configuration, with a linear shaft velocity of 0.47 m/s under specific pressures varying up to 50 MPa.

TL;DR: The aim of the present optimization study is to propose an innovative surface profile design by implementing a wavy form on the upper surface, without varying the physical limits of the complete slider-bearing structure, through the iterative transfer matrix approach.
