TLDR
In this article, a Couette-flow instrument has been modified for measuring the apparent viscosity of mesophase pitch, circumventing most of the experimental difficulties, and the reliability of this apparatus has been tested by cross checking the observed apparent viscoities with the values measured from two other rheometers, Instron Capillary and Seiscor/Han, for a number of fluids.

High-thermal-conductivity, mesophase-pitch-derived carbon foams: effect of precursor on structure and properties

TL;DR: In this paper, a novel foaming technique and the evaluation of the foaming characteristics of two mesophase pitches (Mitsubishi ARA24 and Conoco Dry Mesophase) were presented.
Journal ArticleDOI

Chemistry of synthesis, structure, preparation and application of aromatic-derived mesophase pitch

TL;DR: Mesophase pitch has been synthesized from pure aromatic hydrocarbons aided by an HF-BF3 catalyst as mentioned in this paper, which has better performance for many applications such as carbon fibers, binders, and anode materials for lithium ion batteries etc.
Journal ArticleDOI

Melt spinning pitch-based carbon fibers

TL;DR: In this article, energy and force balances are applied to demonstrate the influence of process variables and material properties on the spinability of mesophase carbon fibers. But the results indicate that the extreme temperature dependence of the viscosity can create filament stresses during melt spinning that are near the ultimate tensile strength of the filament.
Journal ArticleDOI

Preparation and characterization of pitch-based carbon fibers

TL;DR: In this article, a petroleum pitch was heated at 420 °C for 7 h in nitrogen to prepare a carbon fiber precursor with a softening point of 295 °C. The precursor was successfully melt-spun into fibers through a circular nozzle of a monofilament spinning apparatus.

Robust Pitch on Silicon Nanolayer–Embedded Graphite for Suppressing Undesirable Volume Expansion

TL;DR: In this paper, pitch-coated silicon nanolayer-embedded graphite (SG) was used as a promising coating source for high-capacity anodes owing to the high mechanical strength and low-cost process.

The formation of graphitizing carbons from the liquid phase

TL;DR: The formation of graphitizing low-temperature carbons by solidification from a liquid phase proceeds via the separation of a mesophase having properties similar to those of liquid crystals.

The viscosity of concentrated solutions of rigid rodlike molecules (poly-γ-benzyl-l-glutamate in m-cresol)

TL;DR: In this article, the initial slope of the log ηsp/c versus c curves is found to be proportional to the intrinsic viscosity of suspensions of rigid rods and the values obtained experimentally with solutions of poly-γ-benzyl-l -glutamate in m-cresol.
Journal ArticleDOI

Rheological properties of anisotropic poly(para‐benzamide) solutions

TL;DR: In this paper, the viscous properties of poly(para-benzamide) (PBA) solutions in dimethyl acetamide, which undergo a transition from an isotopic to an anisotropic (liquid-crystal) state at a definite concentration C*, were investigated.
