For real-time transmission of broadcast-quality video on ATM-based B-ISDN, the intraframe to interframe ratio and the quantizer scale are two key parameters that can be used to control a video source in a network environment. Their impact on the traffic characteristics of the coder provides insights into the cell arrival process for an MPEG source.

Performance models of statistical multiplexing in packet video communications
TL;DR: This demonstrates that statistical or asynchronous time-division multiplexing (TDM) can efficiently absorb temporal variations of the bit rate of individual sources without the significant variations in reception quality exhibited by multimode videocoders for synchronous TDM or circuit-switched transmission.

Models for packet switching of variable-bit-rate video sources
TL;DR: The authors extend earlier work in modeling video sources using interframe coding schemes and in carrying out buffer queueing analysis for the multiplexing of several such sources, and consider models for scenes with multiple activity levels which lead to sudden changes in the coder output bit rates.

Subband Coding Of Video For Packet Networks
Gunnar Karlsson,Martin Vetterli +1 more
TL;DR: Video coding has been investigated for the novel application of video transmission over packed-switched networks and seems promising in that it lends itself to parrallel implementation, is robust enough to handle errors due to lost packets, and yields high compression with sustained good quality.
