TLDR
The usefulness of animal models in predicting whether a particular compound may act as a histamine liberator in man is discussed, as well as the effects of these compounds on isolated tissue mast cells in vitro, which are shown to vary markedly in their response to given inducers.
Abstract
The systemic responses of different animals to a number of histamine liberators and the effects of these compounds on isolated tissue mast cells in vitro are examined. Mast cells from different species and even from individual tissues within a single animal are shown to vary markedly in their response to given inducers. On this basis, the usefulness of animal models in predicting whether a particular compound may act as a histamine liberator in man is discussed.

Mucosal mast cells: III. Effect of quercetin and other flavonoids on antigen-induced histamine secretion from rat intestinal mast cells

TL;DR: A group of compounds other than doxantrazole are identified, which inhibit histamine secretion by MMC, and all compounds with the possible exception of taxifolin demonstrate significant activity against rat PMC.

Mast cell heterogeneity

TL;DR: In the rodent, mucosai and connective tissue types of mast cells are recognized that are also referred to as atypical and typical or formalin sensitive and formalin resistant, respectively, a similar nomenclature has been used in the human.

Histamine and the hypothalamus.

TL;DR: It is concluded that although there is good evidence now linking histamine and the hypothalamus more specific studies are required, for instance using microinjection or in vitro techniques and the more specific chemical tools now available, to enable a clearer understanding of the physiological role of histamine inThe hypothalamus.

Direct in vivo evidence for mast cell degranulation during allergen-induced reactions in man.

TL;DR: This study provides direct in vivo evidence for allergen-induced mast cell activation in man as well as nonatopic, control subjects without rhinitis.

Anaphylatoxins: C3a and C5a.

TL;DR: This chapter discusses the structural and functional characterization of anaphylatoxins, spasmogenic substances released during complement activation that elicit a variety of cellular responses, which implies that they play a significant role in inflammation and acute allergic reactions.

Reduction of tissue histamine by compound 48/80.

TL;DR: Local and general reduction of tissue histamine could be obtained in several organs such as skin and skeletal muscle, and it was found that restoration to normal histamine level was a slow process.

The effect of alkaline earth cations on the release of histamine from rat peritoneal mast cells treated with compound 48/80 and peptide 401

TL;DR: The possible mechanism of action of the basic releasing agents and their usefulness as models for studying histamine secretion is discussed and Strontium and barium, but not magnesium, will substitute for calcium in this system.
