TLDR
The authors provided an overview of the most productive areas for urban research, and made a number of suggestions for fruitful directions for research in urban design and urban process understanding and urban planning, as well as the role of understanding in planning.
Abstract
This paper provides an overview of the author's derivation of the most productive areas for urban research The first general topic to be considered is the understanding of the urban process, together with the role of that understanding in planning; the second general topic is the problem of generating a limited number of alternative policies which may be considered to be in some sense optimal—in part, the problem of urban design In each case, the nature of the problems associated with the topic is explored, and a number of suggestions are made for fruitful directions for research

Land-Use Plan Design—Quadratic Assignment and Central-Facility Models

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluated models for designing suburban land-use plans with respect to the same large well-defined test problem and found that central-facility models are likely to be more useful than quadratic assignment models for the design of suburban land use plans at the scale considered.

The structure of the solution set to network optimisation problems

TL;DR: It is argued that both heuristic and non-heuristic algorithms for the road network optimisation problem would benefit from a greater understanding of the structure of the set of feasible solutions to such problems.

Optimization Models of Transportation Network Improvement: Review and Future Prospects

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors review the alternative approaches to spatial improvements in transportation networks from the early linear programming attempts to the more recent discrete programming approaches; the more analytical geometrical and optimal control methods; narrow cost minimization models and the more comprehensive attempts to incorporate a broad range of economic and social impacts.

The optimal network problem: Some computational procedures

TL;DR: Three alternative approaches to the solution of the OPTIMAL NETWORK PROBLEM are considered, one of which appears to guarantee at least a good approach to OPTIMality.

Estimating efficient spacing for arterials and expressways

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method to estimate the sum of two COSTs -traVEL and CONSTRUCTION COSTS-BOTH under transportation planning and construction planning.

Optimal routing of urban traffic.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a model for city and regional planning based on the concept of City and Regional Planning (CPRP), which they call City-Region Planning (CRP).
