In this article, a novel passive mode-locking technique was proposed in which two synchronized counterpropagating pulses interact in a thin, saturable absorber to produce a short pulse.
Abstract
We report a novel passive mode‐locking technique in which two synchronized counterpropagating pulses interact in a thin, saturable absorber to produce a short pulse. Continuous stable trains of pulses shorter than 0.1 psec are obtained using a ring laser configuration.

Picosecond acoustics as a non-destructive tool for the characterization of very thin films

TL;DR: In this paper, a sub-picosecond laser pulse generates a high frequency acoustic pulse in opaque thin films of a material and the pulse traverse the film, reflect at the substrate interface and return to the front surface, where it is optically detected by a second laser pulse.

Generation of subpicosecond pulses from an actively mode locked GaAs laser in an external ring cavity

TL;DR: In this article, active mode locking of the emission from a GaAs buried optical guide laser in an external ring cavity was reported. But the active mode lock was not applied to the laser with a 3×1015 cm−2 dosage level.

Ultrashort-pulse sources based on single-mode rare-earth-doped fibers

- 01 Mar 1994 -
TL;DR: An overview of ultrashort-pulse sources based on single-mode rare-earth-doped fibers is given in this article, where a wide range of pulse-generation schemes comprising mode-locked fiber lasers, parametric pulse sources and hybrid diode-fiber amplifier sources are discussed.

Pulses in the femtosecond range from a cw dye ring laser in the colliding pulse mode-locking (CPM) regime with down-chirp

TL;DR: In this paper, the counter-propagating pulses from a transient grating in the thin absorber have been found to have a down-chirp, which corresponds to a wavelength sweep during the pulse duration of about 1 nm.

All-solid-state ultrafast lasers facilitate multiphoton excitation fluorescence imaging

TL;DR: In this paper, a comparison between confocal (488 nm) and two-photon excitation (1047 nm) imaging of a mouse brain slice stained with the lipophilic dye FM4-64 is presented.

Pulse evolution in mode-locked quasi-continuous lasers

TL;DR: In this article, a model of a passively mode-locked quasi-continuous laser is discussed and the evolution of pulses in various cavity configurations is traced and the combined action of amplifier and absorber saturation is shown to lead to rapid pulse compression even when the pulse duration is far shorter than the relaxation time.

Tunable distributed‐feedback dye laser

TL;DR: In this article, an efficient broadly tunable dye-laser action with a narrow line output has been demonstrated with a mirrorless laser system using distributed feedback, which was obtained from a spatial modulation of both gain and index of refraction induced by pumping a liquid organic dye solution with fringes formed by the interference of two coherent light beams.

Passive mode locking of the cw dye laser

TL;DR: In this article, a stable continuous output of picosecond pulses has been achieved using second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements, and the pulses are transform limited and are wavelength tunable over the range 5900-6100 A.
