In this article, the authors investigated the implications of global sourcing for the innovative capacity of the outsourcing company and argued that the loss of organizational proximity that is inherent in outsourcing is compounded by the increase in geographical distance.
Abstract
The main message of the proponents of strategic outsourcing is that it pays off to concentrate on the activities that you are good at. The result of specialization along the value chain will be a product that will be more competitive in terms of price, quality, and innovation. Globalization has many dimensions, but here we mainly want to consider the movement of manufacturing activities to low wage locations. In this paper we will investigate the implications of global sourcing for the innovative capacity of the outsourcing company. We will argue that these implications will be more pronounced in the case of global sourcing, because in that case the loss of organizational proximity that is inherent in outsourcing is compounded by the increase in geographical distance. The findings presented in this paper are the results from an ongoing research project on the relationships between research, development, and manufacturing against the background of increased global outsourcing of manufacturing. Alliance advantage : the art of creating value through partnering

Yves L. Doz, +1 more
TL;DR: Doz and Hamel as discussed by the authors focus on the internal processes within the partnership and the unfolding interactions among partners that play an important and relatively unexplored role in shaping outcomes, and challenge organizations to define their objectives for alliance formulation and consider whether their own corporate culture provides an "alliance ready" atmosphere.

Supplier innovativeness, organizational learning styles and manufacturer performance: An empirical assessment

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors empirically test their hypotheses using hierarchical linear modeling of survey responses from 148 manufacturers concerning 592 suppliers and find that when the outsourced activity involves low levels of design responsibility by the supplier, it is more beneficial for the two partners to have contrasting learning styles.

Offshoring of R&D: Looking abroad to improve innovation performance

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed whether R&D offshoring contributes to enhancing firms' innovation capabilities, and concluded that firms that look overseas can benefit from location-specific and specialization advantages to improve innovation performance.

Limits to global sourcing? Strategic consequences of dependency on international suppliers: Cluster theory, resource-based view and case studies

TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue for the inclusion of an analysis of industry clusters when making decisions about global or local sourcing and support the view that resources which enable a firm to achieve sustainable competitive advantages can be located beyond its legal boundaries.

Proximity and Innovation: A Critical Assessment

TL;DR: Boschma et al. as discussed by the authors argue that the importance of geographical proximity cannot be assessed in isolation, but should always be examined in relation to other dimensions of proximity that may provide alternative solutions to the problem of coordination.

Sticky Information and the Locus of Problem Solving: Implications for Innovation

TL;DR: The impact of information stickiness on the locus of innovation-related problem solving is explored and it is found that when sticky information needed by problem solvers is held at one site only, problem solving will be carried out at that locus, other things being equal.

The Role of Product Architecture in the Manufacturing Firm

TL;DR: The paper is intended to raise awareness of the far-reaching implications of the architecture of the product, to create a vocabulary for discussing and addressing the decisions and issues that are linked to product architecture, and to identify and discuss specific trade-offs associated with the choice of a product architecture.
