TLDR
The inhibition of CH4 production was related to low microbial activities as reflected by decreased microbial biomass C and low soil microbial population including that of methanogens.

A global perspective on wetland salinization: ecological consequences of a growing threat to freshwater wetlands

TL;DR: Salinization, a widespread threat to the structure and ecological functioning of inland and coastal wetlands, is currently occurring at an unprecedented rate and geographic scale as discussed by the authors, and the causes of salinization are diverse and include alterations to freshwater flows, land-clearance, irrigation, disposal of wastewater effluent, sea level rise, storm surges, and applications of de-icing salts.
Journal ArticleDOI

Ramifications of increased salinity in tidal freshwater sediments: Geochemistry and microbial pathways of organic matter mineralization

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of salinity intrusion on the anaerobic microbial and geochemical dynamics of tidal freshwater sediments were investigated using flow-through sediment reactors, and sulfate reduction was the dominant pathway (>50%) of organic matter oxidation within 2 weeks of saliency intrusion, and accounted for >95% of total organic matter mineralization after 4 weeks.
Journal ArticleDOI

The short-term effects of salinization on anaerobic nutrient cycling and microbial community structure in sediment from a freshwater wetland

TL;DR: In this article, microcosm experiments were carried out to examine the acute effects of increasing salinity on the anaerobic cycling of carbon, nutrients (N, P, and S), metals (Fe and Mn), and microbial community structure in sediments from a non-salt-impacted freshwater wetland.
Journal ArticleDOI

Microbial community response to seawater amendment in low-salinity tidal sediments.

TL;DR: Molecular approaches were used to evaluate the response of the prokaryotic community to controlled changes in porewater salinity levels in freshwater sediments from the Altamaha River, Georgia, USA, and found no significant differences were found between microbial community composition of control vs. seawater-amended treatments for either Bacterial or Archaeal members.

Standard methods for the examination of water and wastewater

TL;DR: The most widely read reference in the water industry, Water Industry Reference as discussed by the authors, is a comprehensive reference tool for water analysis methods that covers all aspects of USEPA-approved water analysis.

An extraction method for measuring soil microbial biomass c

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of fumigation on organic C extractable by 0.5 m K2SO4 were examined in a contrasting range of soils and it was shown that both ATP and organic C rendered decomposable by CHCl3 came from the soil microbial biomass.
