TLDR
The immune system is regulated by the gonadal steroids estrogen, androgen, and progesterone, but the circulating levels of these steroids can also be affected by immune system function.Abstract:
The immune system is regulated by the gonadal steroids estrogen, androgen, and progesterone, but the circulating levels of these steroids can also be affected by immune system function. Such interactions appear to be mediated through the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal-thymic axis and depend on pituitary luteinizing hormone released by thymic factors under the control of the gonadal steroids.read more

The complex role of estrogens in inflammation
TL;DR: This review reinforces the concept that estrogens have antiinflammatory but also proinflammatory roles depending on above-mentioned criteria and explains that a uniform concept as to the action of estrogens cannot be found for all inflammatory diseases due to the enormous variable responses of immune and repair systems.

Research needs for the risk assessment of health and environmental effects of endocrine disruptors: a report of the U.S. EPA-sponsored workshop.

TL;DR: The hypothesis has been put forward that humans and wildlife species adverse suffered adverse health effects after exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals and that research should focus primarily on effects on development of reproductive capability, on improved exposure assessment, and on the effects of mixtures.

Male, Female: The Evolution of Human Sex Differences
TL;DR: Geary presents a theoretical bridge linking parenting, mate choices, and competition, with children's development and sex differences in brain and cognition, in a lively and nuanced application of Darwin's insight to help explain the authors' heritage and their place in the natural world.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors suggest that sexual differences in disease have evolved just as sex differences in morphology and behavior, and are the result of selection acting differently on males and females.

Reproductive failure in common seals feeding on fish from polluted coastal waters
TL;DR: It is reported that reproductive failure in common seals from the Dutch Wadden Sea is related to feeding on fish from that polluted area, the first demonstration of a causal relationship between naturally occurring levels of pollutants and a physiological response in marine mammals.

Studies of the regulatory effects of the sex hormones on antibody formation and stem cell differentiation
David Eidinger,Thomas J. Garrett +1 more
TL;DR: Changes in sex hormone levels exerted a marked influence on immune responsiveness and stem cell differentiation, by increasing numbers of functioning cells, by promoting cellular differentiation, as well as by promotes cellular function via hormonal effects.

Danazol for the Treatment of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura
Yeon S. Ahn,William J. Harrington,William J. Harrington,Sheryl R. Simon,Sheryl R. Simon,Ravindra Mylvaganam,Ravindra Mylvaganam,Lorraine M. Pall,Lorraine M. Pall,Antero G. So,Antero G. So +10 more
TL;DR: The drug was well tolerated and appears to be better suited than glucocorticoids for long-term management of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, but the exact indications for the use of danazol in this disorder remain to be determined.

Sex hormone regulation of in vitro immune response. Estradiol enhances human B cell maturation via inhibition of suppressor T cells in pokeweed mitogen-stimulated cultures.
TL;DR: The addition of physiological concentrations of estradiol to pokeweed mitogen-stimulated cultures of human blood lymphocytes significantly increased the accumulation of immunoglobulin M-containing and -secreting cells detected by immunofluorescence and/or by the reversed protein-A plaque assay.

Studies of immune functions of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. i. dysfunction of suppressor t‐cell activity related to impaired generation of, rather than response to, suppressor cells
TL;DR: Observations indicate that the impaired suppressor activity in SLE patients resides in the generation of suppressor T cells, rather than in the response to suppressionor T cell signals.

The influence of the gonads and adrenal glands on the immune response to skin grafts.
TL;DR: The effects of gonadectomy and adrenalectomy on the rejection by preimmunized B10-129(12M) mice of C57BL/10Sn skin allotransplants are concerned.
