Abstract
Basic assumptions of lattice models are discussed. A brief introduction to the partition function and its correlation with thermodynamic properties is given. Lattice models are classified into: regular solutions, quasi-chemical theory, Kirkwood's method, the matrix method, and the central-atom model (surrounded-atom model). The basic assumptions of all these approaches are outlined. Mathematical methods for the derivation of expressions for thermodynamic properties are given in brief for each of these approaches. The applicability and limitations of the derived expressions are discussed in the light of the existing data on binary and ternary systems. The scope and the lines on which further work can be done are indicated.
