TLDR
These somatic hybrids can be used in a potato improvement program to incorporate a valuable pest resistance and have the same level of resistance to infection by race 1 of the nematodeMeloidogyne chitwoodi as the S. bulbocastanum parent used in the fusion.
Abstract
Interspecific somatic hybrids were produced between tetraploid Solanum tuberosum and a nematode-resistant accession of the diploid species So/ahum bulbocastanum by protoplast fusion. Hybrid cells were selected using dual fluorescent labeling of protoplast preparations prior to fusion. Hybridity of regenerated plants was confirmed with a combination of morphological assessment, chromosome counting and isozyme analysis. Somatic hybrids had the same level of resistance to infection by race 1 of the nematode Meloidogyr~ chitwoodi as the S. bulbocastanum parent used in the fusion. Some of the somatic hybrids were fertile as females when crossed with tetraploid S. tuberosum breeding lines. Thus, these hybrids can be used in a potato improvement program to incorporate a valuable pest resistance.

Bioactivities of glycoalkaloids and their aglycones from Solanum species.

TL;DR: A comprehensive review of the bioactivity of glycoalkaloids and their aglycones of the Solanum species, particularly focused on comparison of their bioactivities including their anticancer, anticholesterol, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, and antipyretic effects, toxicity, and synergism of action is presented.

Resistance to late blight in Solanum bulbocastanum is mapped to chromosome 8

TL;DR: Somatic hybrids between potato and Solanum bulbocastanum, a wild diploid Mexican species, are highly resistant to late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans, by noting randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) markers that are closely linked to the resistance.

The potential of somatic hybridization in crop breeding

TL;DR: In this review, the potential of somatic hybridization in the breeding of crops within the Brassicaceae, Fabaceae, Poaceae and Solanaceae is discussed and it is evident from these studies that many hybrids, either symmetric or asymmetric, which are fertile have the potential to be used as a bridge between the alien species and the crop.

RFLP analysis of resistance to Columbia root-knot nematode derived from Solanum bulbocastanum in a BC2 population.

TL;DR: Analysis of the resistance (including non-hosts and poor hosts) as both a qualitative trait and as a meristic trait on which QTL analysis was applied supported the same genetic hypothesis.
