Quantum Engineering: Theory and Design of Quantum Coherent Structures

We define a new methodology, aesthetic computing, for customizing discrete structures found in mathematics, programming, and computer simulation. The methodology is presented as a procedure, defined within the context of the semantic web, involving a successive chain of model transformations from a source model to a target model, with the source model being the discrete structure to represent and the target model being the geometric model. We also present an implementation based on this methodology, and a class where empirical studies were performed to assess student perceptions on how customized model structures affected their understanding and preferences regarding visual and interactive model representations. Students appear to prefer the methodology as a way to inject creativity into model building, and to allow them to explore alternative, analogical representations influenced by the fields of aesthetics and the arts.

Model representation with aesthetic computing: Method and empirical study

In this thesis a new signal processing technique is presented. This technique exploits the use of pulses as the signalling mechanism. This Palmo1 signalling method applied to signal processing is novel, combining the advantages of both digital and analogue techniques. Pulsed signals are robust, inherently low-power, easily regenerated, and easily distributed across and between chips. The Palmo cells used to perform analogue operations on the pulsed signals are compact, fast, simple and programmable. To demonstrate the inherent suitability of the technique to programmable analogue implementations, two chips were fabricated and tested on boards containing a standard FPGA for doing the routing. Results from elementary lter implementations and A/D converters are presented to prove the validity of the approach. Research methodology, in both the natural and social sciences, is conventionally presented as a set of separate techniques. Since instruments of science can, however, be treated as systems, representation by mathematical functions is generally feasible. A simplified notational system for systems representation is presented, then applied to the development of a unified systems concep tualization of basic research operations including: measurement, representation, simulation, theory construction, data searching, and h ypo thesis-testing.

A Mathematical-Systems Approach To a Synthesis of Scientific Methodology

This paper presents an excitatory CMOS neuron oscillator circuit design, which can synchronize two neuron-bursting patterns. The excitatory CMOS neuron oscillator is composed of CMOS neurons and CMOS excitatory synapses. And the neurons and synapses are connected into a close loop. The CMOS neuron is based on the Hindmarsh-Rose (HR) neuron model and excitatory synapse is based on the chemical synapse model. In order to fabricate using a 0.18um CMOS standard process technology with 1.8V compatible transistors, both time and amplitude scaling of HR neuron model is adopted. This full-chip integration minimizes the power consumption and circuit size, which is ideal for motion control unit of the proposed bio-mimetic micro-robot. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed excitatory CMOS neuron oscillator performs the expected waveforms with scaled time and amplitude. The active silicon area of the fabricated chip is 1.1mm including I/O pads.
