TLDR
Putative neuronal membrane markers, gangliosides and sodium, potassium-dependent ATPase, were enriched over 10-fold in these membranes in comparison to the homogenate, which suggests some contamination with glial cell plasma membrane.

Isolation of synaptic plasma membrane from brain by combined flotation-sedimentation density gradient centrifugation.

TL;DR: Compared to previously described methods for obtaining synaptic plasma-enriched fractions of equivalent purity, the procedure reported here is simpler, shorter, and of greater capacity.

The structure of postsynaptic densities isolated from dog cerebral cortex: I. overall morphology and protein composition

TL;DR: A postsynaptic density fraction has been isolated from dog cerebral cortex by a short-procedure modification of methods of Davis and Bloom and Cotman and Taylor, using Triton X-100 and it is considered that the density fraction is moderately pure biochemically, and that its protein composition, aside from a few exceptions noted above, reflects its in situ character.
Journal ArticleDOI

The lipid composition of adult rat brain synaptosomal plasma membranes.

TL;DR: Analysis of the gangliosides by thin-layer chromatography showed that there was no selective enrichment of any individual type in the plasma membranes in relation to total brain, extending the specific fatty acid compositions observed in grey matter and certain sub-fractions by other workers.

Gangliosides as membrane receptors for tetanus toxin, cholera toxin and serotonin

TL;DR: There is good evidence that the monosialosyl ganglioside may be the receptor for cholera toxin in cell membranes; what of the disialosid and tetanus toxin?
Journal ArticleDOI

Rapid preparation of synaptosomes from mammalian brain using nontoxic isoosmotic gradient material (Percoll).

TL;DR: This method utilizes an isoosmotic Percoll/sucrose discontinuous gradient and has some advantages over the traditionally used synaptosomal isolation techniques: it is possible to prepare suitable gradients while retaining isoos molarity, and the time of the preparation is remarkably short.

Protein Measurement with the Folin Phenol Reagent

TL;DR: Procedures are described for measuring protein in solution or after precipitation with acids or other agents, and for the determination of as little as 0.2 gamma of protein.
Journal ArticleDOI

A new and rapid colorimetric determination of acetylcholinesterase activity.

TL;DR: A photometric method for determining acetylcholinesterase activity of tissue extracts, homogenates, cell suspensions, etc., has been described and Kinetic constants determined by this system for erythrocyte eholinesterases are presented.
Journal ArticleDOI

The separation of synaptic vesicles from nerve-ending particles (`synaptosomes')

TL;DR: The disruption of synaptosomes is studied, as separate fractions, synaptic vesicles, intraneuronal mitochondria, external and post-synaptic membranes and the soluble constituents of the nerve-ending cytoplasm for …
