Laser Joining of Different Polymer-metal Configurations: Analysis of Mechanical Performance and Failure Mechanisms

TLDR
In this paper, the authors analyzed the mechanical behavior and failure mechanisms of three polymer-metal configurations: lap, T and Arcan joint configurations, where the metal was locally structured by pulsed laser radiation producing micro-patterns to improve adhesion of the polymeric part.

Laser-based surface pre-treatment for metal-plastic hybrids using a new process strategy

TL;DR: In this article, the laser-based pre-treatment using the circularly oscillating laser focal spot led to a similar joint strength, while being more productive when combined with on-the-fly processing, compared to conventional beam trajectories.

Thermal distortion in surface pretreatment of metal-polymer hybrids using continuous wave laser radiation

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used infrared continuous wave laser radiation to pre-treat metal surfaces and analyzed the deformation of the metal sheets before and after the pre-treatment process.

Joining CFRP/Ti stacks by directed energy deposition: Surface topography effects on interface formation and bonding

TL;DR: In this paper , the effects of surface topography on interfacial formation mechanism were investigated by experimental and numerical approaches, and the results showed that the pores dominated interfacial structures in CFRP/Ti stacks without surface patterns, yet physical gaps played a vital role in line/grid-patterned CFRP and Ti stacks.

Laser direct joining of AZ91D thixomolded Mg alloy and amorphous polyethylene terephthalate

TL;DR: In this article, the authors showed that the formation of gas bubbles in a narrow region inside a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) sample adjacent to the interface can be induced by the pressure induced by expansion of these bubbles, which secures tight bonding in the micro size between AZ91D and PET specimens.

Thermal Joining of Thermoplastic Metal Hybrids by Means Of Mono- and Polychromatic Radiation

TL;DR: In this paper, a novel approach for thermal joining of thermoplastic metal hybrids by means of a combination of mono- and polychromatic radiation was presented, where experiments for transmission and heat-conduction joining were performed.

Laser direct joining of carbon fiber reinforced plastic to aluminum alloy

TL;DR: In this paper, a laser direct joining of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) to aluminum alloy was performed using a high quality continuous wave diode laser with a line-shaped beam.

Laser Surface Pre-treatment of Aluminium for Hybrid Joints with Glass Fibre Reinforced Thermoplastics

TL;DR: In this article, high shear tensile strengths of up to 42 n/mm2 were obtained depending on the allocated material and the surface pre-treatment, which is achieved by using a variety of laser sources and manufacturable surface topographies with structure sizes ranging from macroscopic to nanoscopic profiles.

Effect of metal micro-structuring on the mechanical behavior of polymer–metal laser T-joints

TL;DR: In this article, the metal was locally structured by pulsed laser radiation producing microscopic patterns on its surface and the opposite side of the micro-structured metal was irradiated by a continuous wave (CW) fiber laser to achieve the mechanical interlock between the two materials.
