In this paper, the authors highlight recent accomplishments in the life-cycle performance assessment, maintenance, monitoring, management and optimisation of structural systems under uncertainty, and identify challenges in this area.
Abstract
Our knowledge to model, analyse, design, maintain, monitor, manage, predict and optimise the life-cycle performance of structures and infrastructures under uncertainty is continually growing. However, in many countries, including the United States, the civil infrastructure is no longer within desired levels of performance and safety. Decisions regarding civil infrastructure systems should be supported by an integrated reliability-based life-cycle multi-objective optimisation framework by considering, among other factors, the likelihood of successful performance and the total expected cost accrued over the entire life-cycle. The primary objective of this paper is to highlight recent accomplishments in the life-cycle performance assessment, maintenance, monitoring, management and optimisation of structural systems under uncertainty. Challenges are also identified.

Effects of galvanostatic and artificial chloride environment methods on the steel corrosion spatial variability and probabilistic flexural capacity of RC beams

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors compare the characteristics of spatial growth in steel weight loss and crack width and the structural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams by two corrosion-accelerated methods (i.e., galvanostatic method at six current densities and artificial chloride environment method).

Travel time reliability based bridge network maintenance optimization under budget constraint

TL;DR: In this article, a decision model is developed to assist bridge authorities in determining a preferred maintenance prioritization schedule for a degraded bridge network in a community that optimizes the performance of transportation systems within budgetary constraints at a regional scale.

Design-related reassessment of structures integrating Bayesian updating of model safety factors

TL;DR: In this paper , an approach to revise the partial safety factor for existing structures on the action side, γ E by integrating Bayesian model updating is proposed, which is verified using a real-life railway steel bridge.

Experimental study of the coupling effect on segmental shield tunnel lining under surcharge loading and excavation unloading

TL;DR: In this article , the coupling effect of loading and unloading on shield tunnel linings was investigated and a coupling effect index was proposed to evaluate the coupling degree of different disturbances, and the classification was also presented, divided into favourable, zero and unfavourable coupling effects.

Study on identification and effective utilization of buffers in inventory management

TL;DR: In this paper, the main objective of the study is to effectively utilize the buffers for the constant supply of materials in the construction site, which is a cushion of supply over forecast demand.

A fast and elitist multiobjective genetic algorithm: NSGA-II

TL;DR: This paper suggests a non-dominated sorting-based MOEA, called NSGA-II (Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II), which alleviates all of the above three difficulties, and modify the definition of dominance in order to solve constrained multi-objective problems efficiently.
