Life table and population parameters of cowpea aphid, Aphis craccivora Koch (Homoptera: Aphididae) on five cowpea Vigna unguiculata (L. Walp.) varieties

TLDR
IT835-720-20 is a promising variety with useful genetic resource for cowpea breeding programs aimed at developing resistant varieties against A. craccivora, and may suggest that antibiosis is the modality of resistance.
Abstract
The cowpea aphid, Aphis craccivora Koch, is an important pest of cowpea Vigna unguiculata (L. Walp.) in most tropical regions where cowpea is grown. We used life table and population parameters of the cowpea aphids reared on five cowpea varieties to assess the degree of host plant resistance. The five varieties were Blackeye, B005-C, INIA-37, IT835-720-20 and TVX3671-14C-OID. The parameters measured were fecundity, survival, intrinsic rate of natural increase, pre-reproductive period and relative growth rate of cowpea aphids. Our hypothesis was that cowpea varieties resistant to A. craccivora would have significant effects on life table parameters of the aphid when compared to a susceptible variety. Mean fecundity, age-specific fecundity, survival rates, intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m), pre-reproductive period and relative growth rate differed significantly among varieties. Fecundity, survival, intrinsic rate of natural increase and mean relative growth rate were significantly lower on variety IT835-720-20 compared to susceptible variety Blackeye. The pre-reproductive period was significantly delayed on variety IT835-720-20 compared to other varieties. The adverse effects of variety IT835-720-20 on life table parameters of A. craccivora indicate the presence of host plant resistance. Prolonged pre-reproductive period and reduction in reproductive performance of A. craccivora on variety IT835-720-20 may suggest that antibiosis is the modality of resistance. However, further detailed studies that include determination of biochemical and morphological characteristics that mediate resistance need to be carried out. IT835-720-20 is, therefore, a promising variety with useful genetic resource for cowpea breeding programs aimed at developing resistant varieties against A. craccivora.

Misconceptions about the comparison of intrinsic rates of natural increase

TL;DR: The intrinsic rate of natural increase is a common measurement in entomology to describe and evaluate the growth and adaptation of a population of arthropods to certain environmental conditions and many approaches include statistical misconceptions.

Testing the fecundity advantage hypothesis with Sitobion avenae, Rhopalosiphum padi, and Schizaphis graminum (Hemiptera: Aphididae) feeding on ten wheat accessions.

TL;DR: It is found that fecundity was significantly correlated with mean relative growth rate (MRGR), weight gain, and development time, and that the faster aphid develops the greater body and feces, depending on aphid species, wheat accession, and analyses level.

Identification of Lathyrus sativus plant volatiles causing behavioral preference of Aphis craccivora.

TL;DR: Females preferred a synthetic blend of benzyl alcohol, 1,3-diethylbenzene, thymol, and 1-hexadecene at ratios of 142.49 : 62.03 : 1 dissolved in 25 μl CH2 Cl2 in olfactometer bioassays, which could be used in developing lures to control this insect pest.

Identification of sources of resistance in cowpea mini core accessions to Aphis craccivora Koch (Homoptera: Aphididae) and their biochemical characterization

TL;DR: The HPLC analyses proved that both low sucrose levels in the plant, as well as high levels of kaempferol and quercetin, aglycones of phenolic compounds, were related with high resistance to aphids.

Leaf waxes from Lathyrus sativus: short-range attractant and stimulant for nymph laying in a viviparous insect

TL;DR: The latter blend was more attractive and stimulated females to lay more nymphs than the former blend, and hence, this latter blend could be employed in the development of baited traps in pest management strategies.

Experimental Design and Data Analysis for Biologists

TL;DR: An essential textbook for any student or researcher in biology needing to design experiments, sample programs or analyse the resulting data is as discussed by the authors, covering both classical and Bayesian philosophies, before advancing to the analysis of linear and generalized linear models Topics covered include linear and logistic regression, simple and complex ANOVA models (for factorial, nested, block, split-plot and repeated measures and covariance designs), and log-linear models Multivariate techniques, including classification and ordination, are then introduced.
