Microscopic origin of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy

TLDR
The Bekenstein-Hawking area entropy relation S BH = A 4 was derived for a class of five-dimensional extremal black holes in string theory by counting the degeneracy of BPS solition bound states.

The Large N limit of superconformal field theories and supergravity

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the large-N limits of certain conformal field theories in various dimensions include in their Hilbert space a sector describing supergravityon the product of anti-de Sitter spacetimes, spheres, and other compact manifolds.
Journal ArticleDOI

Large N Field Theories, String Theory and Gravity

TL;DR: In this paper, the holographic correspondence between field theories and string/M theory is discussed, focusing on the relation between compactifications of string theory on anti-de Sitter spaces and conformal field theories.

Holographic Derivation of Entanglement Entropy from the anti de Sitter Space/Conformal Field Theory Correspondence

TL;DR: It is argued that the entanglement entropy in d + 1 dimensional conformal field theories can be obtained from the area of d dimensional minimal surfaces in AdS(d+2), analogous to the Bekenstein-Hawking formula for black hole entropy.

Anti-de Sitter Space, Thermal Phase Transition, And Confinement in Gauge Theories

TL;DR: The correspondence between supergravity and string theory on AdS space and boundary conformal eld theory relates the thermodynamics of N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions to the thermodynamic properties of Schwarzschild black holes in Anti-de Sitter space as mentioned in this paper.

Black Hole Explosions

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that any black hole will create and emit particles such as neutrinos or photons at just the rate that one would expect if the black hole was a body with a temperature of (κ/2π) (ħ/2k) ≈ 10−6 (M/M)K where κ is the surface gravity of the body.

Black holes and entropy

TL;DR: In this paper, the concept of black-hole entropy was introduced as a measure of information about a black hole interior which is inaccessible to an exterior observer, and it was shown that the entropy is equal to the ratio of the black hole area to the square of the Planck length times a dimensionless constant of order unity.

The four laws of black hole mechanics

TL;DR: This article derived expressions for the mass of a stationary axisymmetric solution of the Einstein equations containing a black hole surrounded by matter and for the difference in mass between two neighboring such solutions.

Generalized second law of thermodynamics in black-hole physics

TL;DR: In this article, the authors established the validity of the generalized second law for the infall of an entropy-bearing system into a much larger and more massive generic stationary black hole and determined a general lower bound for the increase in black-hole entropy and an upper bound for entropy of the system.

Operator Content of Two-Dimensional Conformally Invariant Theories

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown how conformal invariance relates many numerically accessible properties of the transfer matrix of a critical system in a finite-width infinitely long strip to bulk universal quantities.
