TLDR
In this paper, the authors apply additive mixed modelling on phyoplankton time series data and show that the additive model can be used to estimate the age distribution of small cetaceans.
Abstract
Limitations of linear regression applied on ecological data. - Things are not always linear additive modelling. - Dealing with hetergeneity. - Mixed modelling for nested data. - Violation of independence - temporal data. - Violation of independence spatial data. - Generalised linear modelling and generalised additive modelling. - Generalised estimation equations. - GLMM and GAMM. - Estimating trends for Antarctic birds in relation to climate change. - Large-scale impacts of land-use change in a Scottish farming catchment. - Negative binomial GAM and GAMM to analyse amphibian road killings. - Additive mixed modelling applied on deep-sea plagic bioluminescent organisms. - Additive mixed modelling applied on phyoplankton time series data. - Mixed modelling applied on American Fouldbrood affecting honey bees larvae. - Three-way nested data for age determination techniques applied to small cetaceans. - GLMM applied on the spatial distribution of koalas in a fragmented landscape. - GEE and GLMM applied on binomial Badger activity data.

Sensory Linguistics: Language, perception and metaphor

Bodo Winter
TL;DR: In this article, a detailed quantitative corpus-based study of English sensory adjectives and their metaphorical uses is presented, which calls age-old ideas into question, such as the idea that the use of perceptual metaphors is governed by a cognitively motivated hierarchy of the senses.

RESEARCH Humans alter habitat selection of birds on ocean-exposed sandy beaches

TL;DR: The authors developed predictive resource selection functions for birds on ocean-exposed sandy beaches at two spatial scales, 25 ha (local scale) and 250 ha (landscape scale), and tested whether habitat selection of birds that commonly use the surf-beach-dune interface is influenced by the rates of human use.

Bee pollinators of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) differ in their foraging behaviour and pollination efficiency

TL;DR: This study demonstrates especially that less frequent and more specialised pollinator species with long tongues improve pollination and cross-fertilisation of faba bean, which is of great importance in plant breeding and seed production.

Extreme drought pushes stream invertebrate communities over functional thresholds.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated for the first time that relatively small changes in drought intensity can trigger disproportionately large functional shifts in stream communities, suggesting that traits‐based approaches could be particularly useful for diagnosing catastrophic ecological responses to global change.
