TLDR
In this paper, the authors apply additive mixed modelling on phyoplankton time series data and show that the additive model can be used to estimate the age distribution of small cetaceans.
Abstract
Limitations of linear regression applied on ecological data. - Things are not always linear additive modelling. - Dealing with hetergeneity. - Mixed modelling for nested data. - Violation of independence - temporal data. - Violation of independence spatial data. - Generalised linear modelling and generalised additive modelling. - Generalised estimation equations. - GLMM and GAMM. - Estimating trends for Antarctic birds in relation to climate change. - Large-scale impacts of land-use change in a Scottish farming catchment. - Negative binomial GAM and GAMM to analyse amphibian road killings. - Additive mixed modelling applied on deep-sea plagic bioluminescent organisms. - Additive mixed modelling applied on phyoplankton time series data. - Mixed modelling applied on American Fouldbrood affecting honey bees larvae. - Three-way nested data for age determination techniques applied to small cetaceans. - GLMM applied on the spatial distribution of koalas in a fragmented landscape. - GEE and GLMM applied on binomial Badger activity data.

Reservoirs of richness: least disturbed tropical forests are centres of undescribed species diversity.

TL;DR: This study shows that even after 250 years of taxonomic classification, about 3050 amphibians and at least 160 land mammal species remain to be discovered and described and finds that tropical moist forests of the Neotropics, Afrotropics and Indomalaya probably harbour the greatest numbers of undescribed species.

On the link between functional traits and growth rate : meta-analysis shows effects change with plant size, as predicted

TL;DR: It is shown how trait–growth correlations change in a predictable way with plant size, suggesting that understanding of plant strategies should shift away from describing species as having a fixed growth strategy throughout their life in favour of a size-dependent growth trajectories.

Drought and immunity determine the intensity of West Nile virus epidemics and climate change impacts

TL;DR: It is shown that over the next 30 years, increased drought severity from climate change could triple West Nile virus cases, but only in regions with low human immunity, illustrating how changes in drought severity can alter the transmission dynamics of vector-borne diseases.

Predicting cyanobacterial dynamics in the face of global change: the importance of scale and environmental context

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors applied linear and nonlinear mixed-effect modeling techniques to seasonal time-series data from multiple lakes and found that the results showed that due to predictable interactions among nutrients and temperature, polymictic and dimictic lakes are expected to respond differently to future climate warming and eutrophication.

Pesticide reduces bumblebee colony initiation and increases probability of population extinction

TL;DR: It is shown that colony-founding queens, a critical yet vulnerable stage of the bumblebee lifecycle, are less likely to initiate a colony after exposure to thiamethoxam, a neonicotinoid insecticide.
