In this paper, a mode scrambler using CO 2 -laser inscribed long-period gratings for mixing 3 spatial modes was demonstrated using a swept-wavelength interferometer.

Statistics of Group Delays in Multimode Fiber With Strong Mode Coupling

TL;DR: In this paper, the modal group delays (GDs) are defined as the eigenvalues of zero-trace Gaussian unitary ensemble and the probability density function (pdf) of the GDs is derived analytically for fibers with two to seven modes.

Long-Period Fiber Gratings for Mode Coupling in Mode-Division-Multiplexing Systems

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the effect of strong mode coupling via mode scrambler on the group delay scaling of a long-haul MIMO system and showed that the mode-dependent loss of the grating can be minimized while ensuring full intergroup mode coupling.

Large-bandwidth, low-loss, efficient mode mixing using long-period mechanical gratings

TL;DR: A new architecture for using long-period fiber gratings (LPGs) to induce strong mode mixing with low loss for space-division multiplexing is proposed and strong mixing between LP01 and LP11 for a whole C band is demonstrated.
