TLDR
Injuries to specific soft tissue structures such as the Lisfranc and Spring ligaments can be accurately assessed on MRI when the imager considers both direct and indirect or supportive findings, allowing appropriate therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation.
Abstract
Traumatic injuries involving the foot and ankle are very common. With the advent of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and its unsurpassed ability for soft tissue characterization, its utility in the investigation of these patients with foot and ankle trauma has rapidly expanded over the last decade. MRI has the unique capability to evaluate osseous, ligamentous, tendinous, and muscular injuries about the foot and ankle, with a single imaging study. MRI also allows for characterization of injury based on known biomechanical patterns. Injuries to specific soft tissue structures such as the Lisfranc and Spring ligaments can be accurately assessed on MRI when the imager considers both direct and indirect or supportive findings, allowing appropriate therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation.

Prediction of midfoot instability in the subtle Lisfranc injury. Comparison of magnetic resonance imaging with intraoperative findings.

TL;DR: Magnetic resonance imaging is accurate for detecting traumatic injury of the Lisfranc ligament and for predicting Lispranc joint complex instability when the plantar LisfRanc ligaments bundle is used as a predictor.

Evaluation of anterior talofibular ligament injury with stress radiography, ultrasonography and MR imaging.

TL;DR: The diagnostic value of stress X-P, US, and MR imaging in diagnosis of ATFL injury is clarified and is considered to be the gold standard.

Osteochondral Lesions About the Ankle

TL;DR: Noncontrast MR imaging is the standard of care imaging modality for diagnosing and classifying osteochondral lesions, but equivocal or difficult lesions can be assessed more specifically with direct MR arthrography or in conjunction with multidetector CT.

Ankle arthritis: review of diagnosis and operative management.

TL;DR: The gold standard for operative intervention in end-stage degenerative arthritis remains arthrodesis, but evidence for the superiority in functional outcomes of total ankle arthroplasty is increasing and the next few years will enable more informed decisions.
